Sorry to go off topic, but sometime this week give it a compression test (you can borrow mine or talk to Paul), but from what I saw last fall there was already evidence of a BHG. Obviously not related or a direct cause but its not helping you out at all either.

In the interest of accuracy the factory theft deterrent system only inhibits cranking, something the poster states his engine will do...

You're right. Missed that part of the post. Jumped to the problem a backwards battery hook up caused my stepson. Sorry, my attention span for reading has lapsed in the past few years.

I hear ya. Have to read everything twice these days myself and even then it sometimes doesn't help in understanding what half these guys are trying to say. My point was only that the theft system as it comes from the factory has no control over ignition or fuel. From a security standpoint it should though and anyone who retains the stock alarm should consider the modification.

7M ECUs are pretty much bulletproof, except for reverse polarity events.

If you resolve all fusible links and everything else and it still doesn't work, you may need to consider getting a replacement ECU.

If I were to look at getting a new ecu, do I need to make it from the same year? I have an 87 turbo 5spd, and the ecu I am looking at is an 88turbo 5spd. would that work? Also, would I have to do anything special when I install it? I am willing to try most things, and if I get the ecu and the problem still isnt with the ecu, I will have an extra ecu just in case or if a friend needs it.

Could it be my ecu even if the car is turning over and I have full lights and most electrical parts working for sure? Could that actually be one of the main reasons I am not getting spark or fuel?

Normally I would say the ECU is unlikely to be the problem, but in this case it cannot be ruled out. The 87-88 Turbo MTM ECUs were different from the factory, but I believe are interchangeable. Part numbers 89661-14130 and 89661-14131 are interchangeable for sure. For example, if you bought a rebuilt one from Toyota they would spec 89661-14131-84 for both those years.

First make sure you have power (Batt, IGSW) at the ECU connectors. With the IGN on, you should see the main relay energize and get power at +B1 and +B. The check engine light should come on if all the above is good.

Well, when I try and start the car the check engine light does come on, I shouldnt need a new ecu than. I also get another light that I am not sure of what it is. It has a picture of our car and the tail lights are flashing? what does that mean?

The one far to the left? that looks like this IIIII its the coolant sensor and you have low coolant. If your talking about the on in the same cluster as the check light, youve got a rear tail light out.

He meant "CEL"...Check Engine Light.

Did you look at the power distribution fuses I pointed out in Post #13?

Did you ever try to pull engine codes? Not much point in guessing until you do.

I was about to do that right now, I just got home from work. You are talking about the paper clip thing, correct? Dont I need to have the car started to check the codes? This is something I am unable to do.

No, it does not have to be started. Make very sure you jump the correct terminals...the link I posted is a no-brainer.

If all else fails, take JJ's advice ;)
