The problem that he is having is an issue on some cars. Like I said in my last post, I think that toyota had changed the casting at somepoint and made the housing that the bucket rides in thicker. I have installed several sets of studs in different 7M's and some fit and some dont. Adjuster, I have tried the method that you stated and and it didn't work. With the stud installed and the head sitting on all the way down, the nut will not go on the stud as outside of the bucket housings interfer with it just as he said was his problem. Now that I think about it, the casting was probably not changed, but the tooling diameter was changed that was used to create the machined releaf in the housing and there for offers less clearance.

For anyone that does not beleave me, you are more then welcome to come and try it on my head when my motor comes out to put my 1UZ in.

Ian, thats a good idea, but like I said, the more that I think about it, I dont think that it is a casting issue, but actually a tooling issue. the part that doesn't make sence is that is that all the heads that I have ever seen have releafs cut into the housings but the diameter is not the same as the counterbore releaf for the washer and you would think that it would be as when the counterbore bit when in that it would machine that part to the same diameter. My thought is that they would have the drill and counterbore in one tool to kill two birds with one stone to save production time, but I guess that they didnt and they did it in multiple steps.

well i got all of the nuts on except the two towards the front of the head. one on each side. even if i turn the cams its just not going to be possible, so i am going to take 2 nuts to work with and turn a little off the flange for clearance. i didnt want to have to do this but i am going to.

Didn't we JUUUUST tell you how to solve this problem?????

Chris: If the Robot drifts a touch between steps it would explain the error Chris, the casting number may still help to pinpoint which batch were off though!

Interesting side note looking at Allan's mint 87 gte his head is a #10 this surprised me that they made 10 revisions in a year! (My new casting is the last at #16)

Thank you chris. i swear this thread was not suppose to drag out this long. i did everything i could. it was an obvious clearance issue and i couldnt just lift my head up with the sealant on there. also i did put the head on and then put the studs in. shaving a couple thousands off the o.d. flange will save me alot off trouble in the future. i am glad there is a thread for ref. about this now. oh ya cocky bastards. jk thanks for the help guys. greatly appreciated.
