EDIT: Culprit found to be Radiator cap.

---------------------------------------------------------
Hey guys. I've been doing a lot of lurking, as with my new work schedule, I haven't had an honest day off in over two weeks- so I have very little time to do much work on the Supra.

I noticed a fairly serious problem the other day that's shown up only recently. After driving the car for an extended period of time, the coolant reservoir tank would start boiling and spitting coolant out the overflow hose. I never once saw the temp gauge needle raise past the half way mark, but this problem was growing to be more and more consistent.

At first, I thought it might be the cheap POS thermostat a friend and I put in a few months back, so I went out and got the best one Kragen stocked and stuffed that in this afternoon, only to find the problem remained.

Here's a link to a video of the problem in question:

In any event, I'm pretty sure this means I've got a Blown Head gasket. I haven't seen any oil in the coolant or vice versa yet- I'm going to drive it up to a friend's place on Wednesday to run a compression test on it, just to be sure.

If it does is in fact turn out to be a BHG, I'll likely stick it in a car port and start the long grueling process of a rebuild over the next 6 months (provided I get some free time away from work).

My question is this: Is there anything else that would cause these symptoms? Is it possible I'm missing something else that could cause this to happen? I'm posting here, already figuring the answer will be a resounding no- but you can't blame a guy for hoping, right?

I would check the radiator cap and also make sure that the radiator is not clogged.

I thought about that- the cap looks very new, but I'll either test it or pick up a new one tomorrow to see if that helps any.

Thanks for the suggestion.

NAPA block test.

After you run it to warm up, take a look in the coolant bottle...if you see bubbles...not good :3d_frown:

Welcome my friend, welcome :) This is *exactly* what my car does. I replaced the thermostat and rad cap from Toyota a few weeks back hoping that would fix the problem. After along drive I got a lot of air in my system (temp gauge was rockin' out) I pulled over and noticed coolant spewing all out of my overflow bottle. I've been nursing it like this for a few weeks, never boosting and making sure to keep the overflow bottle topped up as the car cools down. But, I'd prepare for the worst ;)

Keep something in mind about a BHG. You are likely getting coolant in your oil...it does nasty things to your bearings. The more you drive it, the more damage. This is why rod knock will often follow a BHG.

The question is...do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?

Its all good man, keep strong, its only going to allow you to get to know your engine more. Think positive, its nothing like a kick in the gonads to think negative when the negative happens.

I'm pretty sure it's blowing steam into my reservoir tank.

Not yet... But I have a feeling that's only a matter of time.

I've been keeping a really close eye on that- I haven't seen any signs of Coolant in the oil or vice versa. Either way, I'm certainly not driving it any more then I have to- I have another car I can drive around. The Supra will remain parked until Wednesday when I run it up the mountain to a friend's place for that compression test.

I have lost all faith in Toyota.
Now now- don't say that. :( This car has put down 250,000 miles and 20 years of dutiful service. Once I get a new head gasket in it, it will certainly do another 250,000 and 20 more years. :) I have no idea what the previous owner was doing to this car, but I can tell you I had a vortec tin POS installed in a hose off the throttle body (??) and a number of other really stupid mods. This car may very well have been hammered into the ground by it's previous owner.

Now I've got emotions tied up in it, and I've just /got/ to get it fixed up. ..and right. :)

Cure for BHG = properly torqued head bolts and no more than moderate boost (trying to keep it below fuel cut)
With the boost leaks I've had in this thing, I've never even hit 8lbs. :nono:

And once I'm done with my rebuild, I doubt I'll be pushing much more then 12. :icon_bigg

That's exactly the attitude I'm taking. The only issue is my schedule- if work keeps draining me dry like they have been, I won't get this even started for another month.

But once I get into it, I'm pretty sure I'll get it done quickly enough. I'll miss my car too much!

Thanks for your suggestions everyone- and your encouragement and advice as well. It's all very much appreciated.
