Let him know that with a BHG it will require a complete tear down to check and probably replace the bearings at the very least, and with that many miles on it, it would lead to a complete Overhaul. Offer $1200 and see if that flys. It would cost quite a lot to take it to a shop have them rebuild it.

I don't care what anyone says...that car is in amazing shape for it's age. $2k is quite reasonable (of course it wouldn't hurt to try and talk them down $500)...you can easily properly replace a head gasket for around $500 if you do it yourself.

Ok, This car is still alive in the area. I found it at a different small dealership across town. I got the keys, which were original, and got inside. The car started right up and ran really well. I poked around, checked the radiator, and didn't seem to be that bad. Maybe someone replaced the HG in the past few months. The motor looked like it was caked in dirt since only the top of everything was wiped clean. Not much else looked different to the car, other than some paint chipped off on the corner of the rear bumper. When I brought the keys back, I asked the price......

$5995!!!!!!!

I still can't afford it. It'd be sweet, though.

If I had the opportunity to buy an '88 NA MT, gray in and out, with the sport package and a solid roof that was in as good condition as this silver one, I'd jump on it for even $6k.

Why? It'd only take me a couple of weekends to transfer my mods and I'd have a solid car that'll last me another 21 years. It'd be like starting over again, and I'd do that in a heartbeat.

Consider that I bought my '88 NA MT in 1992, with 42k miles for $8000. 16 years later, I'd do it again. I want another, but new. At this point, it would cost me way more than $6k to strip it down to de-rust everything and re-do the interior with equal-quality materials.

ps this silver one needs the $200 e-bay steering wheel recover...
