Alright, so this goes out to anyone who's had ABS/PPS problems. My ABS light has been on ever since I've owned the car, and my steering has always been too stiff at low RPM's/idle. Looking through the service records, I found a receipt from '02 where the PO took the car to Toyota and complained that the ABS light was on and that the power steering was inoperable; according to the receipt, they ran a diagnostic on the ABS and found a code 30, which is an inoperable/missing rear ABS sensor, and they claimed the steering problem was due to a clogged reservoir screen but they didn't clean it.
SO...tonight I dove into the PS system and found the fluid to be at the right level, albeit extremely dirty, but the filter to be mostly clean. Regardless, I cleaned the filter and flushed and bled the system. This didn't help my problem. SO, back to the drawing board...
I was looking at the TSRM and one of the tests it says to run if the PPS is too stiff is to check the rear speed sensor signal to the PPS ECU. I haven't yet done this, but I know for a fact that my rear speed sensor is faulty.
My question (finally) is this; has anyone else ever noticed these two problems together? It's a long shot but I'm thinking I might be able to kill 2 birds with one stone...however, the sensor is extremely expensive from Toyota (I believe I priced it when I first got the car and it was close to $300) and next to impossible to find used. I can live with no ABS, but if this one thing might fix both problems, maybe I could justify the price....
