That's what you call it when you keep your foot on the gas between shifts right?

How much damage does that do to the clutch/tranny? I imagine it works well for maintaining your spool. Would my HPF full face feramic + RPS 3200lb PP hold up to this sort of abuse on a regular basis? What if you did this while shifting from 4000-5000rpm rather then redline and with light throttle and not full throttle... does that make it ok? :)

All I can say is that your definition is right and most say it's bad no matter what.

I do it all the time.. gotta go fast.. its hard on the trans, and the clutch.. but really havn't broke anything.. A trans died on me but it was making noise ever since i got it..

I've bent a shift fork.. well not the fork the bolt holding the fork on.. but thats more of shifting too fast/hard...

I have been trying to fix it, but its habit now.. on my logs it drops to like 60% throttle before i go full again

im bored..

i'm using a resurfaced/balanced stock flywheel... shouldn't weld :) (I hope!)

Actually I've been shifting like this for the past month or so.... but not so harsh. Instead of shifting at redline I shift around 5000 rpm when driving somewhat agressively.... and I maintain light throttle on the gas rather then let go. Not quite power shifting with full throttle, but it keeps the turbo spooling for a quick response and my clutch grabs 100% solid everytime I slap her into gear :)

I can understand doing this when racing or going down the strip but why power shift during everyday driving. You are just putting unnecessary wear and tear on your clutch and tranny. I personally shift like a granny when driving around town. No need to tear it up everywhere you go.

Sorry that didn't really answer your question. However I'm sure that constantly power shifting will decrease the life of your clutch and tranny.

when you go to the track you hear 2 kinds of shifts.....

"waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!" ... putt putt putt ... "waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!" ...putt putt ... "waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhh!"
(granny shifting)

"waaaaaaaaaaaaahh!!!" "WAAH!" "waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh!!" "WAAH!" "waaaaaaaaaaaaaaahh!!"
(powershifting)

Seems like all the pros powershift, but they also rebuild their engine/tranny once a month so....... :) I'm sure there's some happy medium between the two that get you going quick but doesn't put a ton of strain on your tranny.

before i swapped my old, tired GE out, i powershifted several times. (actually, it was several months before i did)- but in any case, i can tell you it's not good for the engine, tranny, clutch, flywheel, etc...

after all, how would YOU feel if someone spun your merry-go-round at 6000+rpm and threw you onto it? haha. :)

i don't powershift everywhere i go... and i don't do it at full throttle/redline at all. but i do keep the throttle light between shifting about 1/2 the time i drive. after all i don't drive it daily, when i take it outside i wanna have some fun :)

Here is the deal on powershifting - do it a whole lot, and you will no longer be shifting into an actual gear, you will go into the gear, give her gas, and you will go nowherez. All it does is kill the gears inside of the transmission. As far as engine damage goes, it can hurt that a lot if you can't shift fast enough, as in bounce off red line and all that stuff... so yeah, if you do it, be REALLY quick about it.

Absolutely kills your clutch when you powershift, no way around it.

Is it really faster? Yes, its quite a bit faster, if you are really good at performing a powershift, it can give you the edge in a race if you are racing a car that is equivalent to what your car is (like if you were racing a car that had all the same mods as you did, or if your in a stock car racing another stock car with almost matching stats).

My friend powershifted his Mustang in every race, and he ended up swapping transmissions every few months. It wasn't much of a drag car or anything like that, just a really loud 302 with a 5 speed - and he drove the piss out of it.

All I can really say is, if you want to powershift - do it right, or don't do it at all... its not worth it to do it until your desperate. I have been desperate before a time or two in my 944, I was doing first to win 3 races with my friend once, and he got me the first race... and I knew that there was room for me to get him (nose to nose racing), so the 2nd race I just raced him like normal (waited on him to screw up), and he didn't, so come the third race I powershifted and got about a car ahead (when the other races it was nose to nose). I easily got him the other 2 times doing the same thing. So it really is affective, just make sure you do it right, and its something you do when your desperate.

I like the audio clips there. The whole happy medium sounds like a much better alternative then power shifting.

I would not think powershifting to bea very good way to shift. I have done it countless times and I think you are faster by just performing a fast shift. Especially from 1st to 2nd during a power shift you will just break the tires loose.

i power shift only from 2nd to 3rd haha.. 1st to 2nd no bloody way. 2nd to 3rd no problem. and i havent gone long enough to worry about 3rd to 4th so haha. but it definately keeps er spooled up when doing it that way. usually the car might bark into 3rd shifting as fast as i can with foot off, but if i powershift it into 3rd the car slides. im not running a lightened flywheel or anything like that so revs dont skyrocket between shifts, so im sure that helps haha.

lol yea.. on the street if i power shifted it would just spin bouncing off the revlimiter the whole way through 2nd.. its fun..
