I will never understand why people don't fix things to factory specs. It can't really be called fixing in that case...

perfect example is the head gasket on 7m's they were under torqed from the factory. not everything in every car is perfect, that is why we car enthousiasts enjoy tinkering and modding things as we choose :)

Well now that you fixed up the driver side switch the passenger side switch will work.. so deleting the passenger switch was pointless....

ha ha ha lol, i didnt even think of that ;) na if its that bad i will roll both windows down. i acutally preferr the set up this way because i dont like to let people smoke in my car and somehow my friends always figure out away to crack the window and smoke ( before it broke ) i didnt tell them i fixed it and i dont plan on it. think about it this way. im saving a gorgeous leather interrior from smelling like cancer sticks :) i think its worth the switch. if it was a four door i could understand, but i like the idea of the passanger being in charge of the vehicle. if i really need to focus on something i dont need my passanger rolling his window down on the highway and freezing me out. all someone has to do is ask, i have no problem being polite.

^ Wise words. Fwiw abrasive "cleaning" of contacts, even with correct burnishing tools, generally shortens their life and doesn't last. That said here's a guide for the driver's side that can cause pax window problems:

I delved into this a little without doing proper research, and have likely gone through the silver plating (if the PO didn't do it before me, the contacts were BLACK).

Could a drop of silver solder on the contact point be a good way to build it back up?

Problem is true silver solder, the kind jewelers use (known as "hard"), isn't solder at all but more akin to a brazing alloy due to its high silver content. With such a high melting point you'll need a torch, preferably a small one like the Smith Mini. I have one and it's great for precision work. Not to mention the correct flux. It's all more trouble than it's worth. Better to just buy a new switch.

For another project in which the switch (actually keypad) could not be purchased, I resorted to soldering small gold plated shim stock onto the contacts. Has been working for 10 years since without issue.

So you are saying my Weller 80 amp would produce difficulties.

I am lazy sometimes. I would also just buy a switch.

the contacts on my mws were through the silver plating. the finer the sand paper the better ( within reason ) i used 600 gritt. the larger the gritt the faster it will burn out. if worse comes to worse the contacts will just foul up again. in witch case i would try to make a sleeve, or solder tinfoil to it.

This thread cracked me up. Put your passenger switch back in. If you don't want your passenger to smoke tell them not to. Why fix it and then remove it, that made me laugh and also had me scratching my head. I believe I have a master switch too if someone needs it Ill try and find it in my garage.
