My power steering is pretty bad.. i use all my strength to turn the wheel. i was wondering how to determine whats the problem. if its the pump or the rack and pinion.?

what if your just low on fluid?

If you do add more, DO NOT USE ANYTHING WITH "STOP-LEAK". Too viscuous and doesn't flow right making air pockets and what not.

If you need new PS pressure line, visit driftmotion.com for a great solution to that PIA

fluid full??? leaking ???? pump noisey??? if noisey.. while turning or all time??

also to add, is it tight throught the turning range or does it have free spots were it works??? if it does that it's the rack if it's tight all the time and no leaks look into the pump. if pump is in question get a reading of the pressure from the pump compare to manufacturer's specs

99% of the time the pump is at fault... no pressure = no power steering

kinked line, leaks, wrong fluid, old fluid, leaks, ect can cause it as well, but if all seems right....

The same thing happened to my 89, i just bought a power steering pump for 60bucks threw it in and no more problems, but my shit got real hard to turn, no leaks, good fluid. the pump just went bad i guess. good luck

Take the car to a steering place, throw them a few dollars and ask them to look at the problem.
At least this way you know which component is failing, and you don't replace say a pump when the relief valve on the rack is dumping or similar.
Wish I had a dollar for every time someone has replaced a rack or pump and teh problem has persisted!
And be sure to thoroughly flush the system (and clean teh filter in the reservior) with fresh fluid, with the new component NOT CONNECTED, before you put it back together. No point pushing all those bits of junk through the new parts.

had the same problem with my supra

the hose running from the reservoir cracks very easily and thats where my problem was at. seems like its too easy of a solution but those old hoses get hard and crack often

let us know how it goes
