steer.

only minutely affecting the steering effert needed to steer....of couse it will be a little harder at slow speeds...but at high speeds it should stay the same.

ONE LESS thing to worry about going wrong in the car...well I am ALL FOR IT

Actually you will have ONE MORE thing to worry about...killing some poor inocent slob like me that happens to get in your way while your tooling around in your 3500lb car with no p/s.

If you think this will only increase your steering effort (not effert)
"a little" at slow speeds and at high speed "it should be the same", you are in for a big surprise...and not a good one either.

It's a lousey mod and usually done on some beater owned by some loser who would rather spend the money on underglows rather then fix what needs fixing.

If you do decide to go ahead and disco your p/s I would get the best auto and life insurance money can buy, chances are you'll need it.

I'll jump in on this as well.....

This has to be about the dumbest idea I've read here guys!

If you really want a manual rack get a real manual rack with the correct ratio that allows you to turn it under all conditions.

Many years ago I used the internals from a PS box in my manual steering car to get a faster ratio and while it was less turns lock to lock you just about tore the steering column out of the dash parking that bitch with big front tires...

I have been thinking about doing the mustang rack.....it does take SOME work but not much....the thing is finding a GOOD mustang rack, LOL

Like Upgradedsupra posted,

I just want to have a cleaner engine bay...easier to work on....less to go wrong......

My fathers 350Z steering is ALOT heavier than my supra's....and Patrick ( my mk3 buddy) drove my fathers car and told me when he re routed his PS lines on his PS rack ( the mod in general) that it was about the same feeling of resistance over the mk3.....its not that much at all.

And wow, if its too much to handle or does not live up to my expectations ( which I already know it WILL) All I have to do is put the PS pump and lines back on......woop-de-friggen-doo.....

Jon: Find a nice windy downhill section shut the motor off and coast down it then decide if that's what you want all day every day.
(you'll have enough brakes for one or two applications so keep this in mind)
(surely a new Mustang rack can be bought cheap there?)

WRONG.

The only way you will have the effect of that type of situation is if you have filled the rack COMPLETELY full of PS fluid....and then capped the lines off so there is NO where for the fluid to go inside the PS rack......the pump stops the whole system and there is like 100psi of pressure built up that HINDERS you from steering.

If you would READ sir IJ, you would understand that you empty 90% of the fluid inside the rack itself ( which is not a problem as upgradedsupra stated since the rack inself has sealed mechanisms that do not have to be constantly oil'd like some manual racks).....keeping the 10% or so left in the rack prevents corrosion and still keeps things lubed up.

IJ, its not about the $ for the manual mustang rack....its finding one in GOOD CONDITION.....they have been sitting outside for years and probably are open to the enviroment..

As I said can't you buy a NEW Mustang rack there?

an early 90's mustang rack...much less NEW.....are you completely off your rocker? I am NOT that rich...LOL

That part would be in EXCESS of $300 EASILY. :aigo:

....but yes that would be nice and much less greasy....

Jon: I have trouble believing you just wrote that!

Your talking about your new motor/combination yet you say you need to be rich to buy a $300 rack?

You enjoy driving the curves I'd think new precise steering would be right at the top of your list of must haves?

I got my rack and pump rebuilt last time I had the motor out and it's so nice to drive with 0 play/slop!

IJ how much did it cost to have the rack rebuilt? mine is leaking and a new one from auto zone is like 262 but if i can get it rebuilt for under 150 then i may just do thst. There are some things you just don't go used on steering parts, alt, battery, and other got to work parts

so let me get this straight

200 lbs man vs 3500 lbs of mechanical force wanting to go straight.

I hope for you own life sake that you never lose control of the car or hit a significant bump at speed..

I am going to put it bluntly. Upgradedsupra this is for you too.

You nor anyone on here with the stock supra rack without powersteering WILL win if your car fish tails or goes over a bump at speed. Even if you are the worlds strongest man. Why? Simple reason PHYSICS. One, the 7m does not have the proper GEAR RATIO to apply torque necessary to correct the steering if the wheels are sliding. In reality the steering ratio is more conducive to AMPLIFY the torque the wheels send to the steering THEREBY ripping the steering wheel from your hand and naturallly pointing to where it wants to go.

I am saying this this one time ONL. you and everyone else has been warned.

$262 is a bargain MP!

We don't have the quantity of Supras here for anyone to offer rebuilt parts of the shelf so all rebuilds are on your existing core therefore pricey!
(Here you mention "Supra" and the price triples instantly)

So you want to get rid of the power steering because...? So your engine bay looks cleaner? That sounds like a pretty shitty compromise... Keep your power steering...
When I posted this I didn't really know what I was talking about. Now though I have looped the lines on the PS rack and it sucks ballz. Do not do this, trust me. I have no confidence in avoiding an accident or carving tight corners. I'm going to swap in a manual rack if I can find some info...
