I know already about the mustang manaul steering rack conversion...

and I know that if you leave the power steering rack on our cars open ( take off the pump and drain the fluid from the rack itself) that the seals will wear away.....or would they?

Have any of you guys removed the PS pump/reservoir and lines and made your power steering rack essentially just a manual rack?

I know it sounds "ghetto"...but I have thought about this for some time now.

if you were going to use the stock rack as a pseudo manual rack, you'd need to rid yourself of the pump, resivour, fill the rack almost full of PS fluid, then loop the lines so no dust/contaminants get in there to seize it up.

do i recommend doing this to a 3500lb car? no, no i dont. but if you're so inclined...

the ratio is NOT too NON-powersteering friendly. the first large bump you hit, or turn you drift, you'll wish you had your PS back. ;)

Thats exactly what my friend patrick said...he ran without PS for 1 year on his supra ( made 518 whp LOL)....Then he switched out to the mustang rack which was "oh so much better" and it cleaned up the engine bay....

If you PS pump quits while your driving...of couse its ALOT harder to steer because you have fluid pressure not going ANYWHERE...so the steering wheel wont steer.

Thats the beauty of thsi mod. You keep some fluid in the rack, but drain out most of it ( from what I have been told just barely loosen the return and sending bolts with both lines ran into each other ( looped into another))...the fluid left will keep the seals from degrading and such.....only minutely affecting the steering effert needed to steer....of couse it will be a little harder at slow speeds...but at high speeds it should stay the same.

I have no care in the world for people that just badger me......its my car and my ideas.....and I do what I wish.....

If it makes me feel better and makes it EASIER to work on my car and have ONE LESS thing to worry about going wrong in the car...well I am ALL FOR IT.

I can give a little to git a little. :)
Its all about being satisfied with yourself and what you have made. I think it will satisfy me.

What you described above is fine Jonathan. I have had my PS like that for almost 1 year and 1/2 now and is fine. It is OVERRATED that it is hard to steer when stopped. If you DO find it hard, I think someone needs to work out a lil :icon_razz

1.MUCH! better to work on car
2.looks cleaner engine bay
3.and less to go wrong

If there is one thing that gives a benefit I think about it and if 2 I think about it and 3 I for sure do it without thinking. Do what YOU want and I am sure you will be happy.

PS: Don't forget that the rack itself has it's own greece and the PS has a res (in the rack) for the ps assist. if I remember correctly.

Welp! That concludes my quandries guys!

Thanks to Dwain and Mr. Anonymous that PM'd me about this. You know who you are :icon_razz

I will be doing this mod sometime soon, as in the same time I do my turbo upgrade....

I just feel that the PS system in my car just takes up so much space and its leaky too...so PS oil is everywhere in the general area of the AFM and such....very dirty looking! Ewwwww!

again, thanks for all your helps guys! I hope this helps some other people questioning about this!

can you foward me those PM's so i can see. I'm curious about this as well

Malloynx, they are PM's for a reason....LOL  I AINT TELLIN!

Its not that hard to do...basically make or buy universal hard lines about 8"-12" long that fit those funny bolts....bend the piping and go....well after the most part of the fluid is draind to keep from overpressuring the PS rack.

I am finding out this is one of those "underground" type of mods not alot of people research or know about.

.......I feel that you may have wrecked your car due to this issue with removing the PS lines and pump...and looping the lines back into themselves?

eh, probably because i've been driving for under 2 years...and only 2 months with manual transmission...and only 3 weeks without power steering. Throw inexperience with loss-of-control and evasive maneuvers in and you can probably make a pie chart showing why my passenger side looks like crap :icon_conf

what I'm saying is a good driver would have a nice looking car right now, where the inexperienced one would have one like mine...

so wats the best idea to go around eliminating the PS completely without getting the system polluted or w/e?

Thats why you loop the feed and return line back into each other...there is NO open holes for water or debri or foreign objects to enter.....
