Power Steering Fluid Path and hose replacement

So I am looking at revamping all the lines that could possibly leak on my aged PS system. Im trying to do all this before the weather takes a turn for the colder.

I already replaced a leaking right steering racks seal/boot with a rebuilt rack.

I am planning to purchase the Driftmotion PS Hi-Press line w/fittings.

I am trying to trace the path of the fluid and hose sizes that I need to purchase to seal and secure the system.

Correct me if I am wrong please,

- Starting at the PS Reservoir 3/4" ish rubber suction hose leading to PS suction nipple on PS pump.

- Then we have from the PS pump High pressure output line to steering rack.

- then we have line from steering rack to PS cooler.

- then we have line from cooler to return nipple on PS Reservior. Looks to be 3/8" ish diameter hose.

My question is, to replace all the low pressure rubber hose, what size hose diameter do I need and how many feet of each diameter? I can only see about a foot of 3/8" rubber line from hardline coming from behind pass headlight leading back to the reservoir and the larger 3/4" or 1" diameter line leading from reservoir to pump.

Are there any other soft rubber lines that may be in need of replacement on the PS system?

Sorry for the lengthy post but searching has gotten me vague topic and the TSRM steering chapter didnt quite have a picture of the entire PS fluid & cooling system route. (unless I looked in the wrong section)

Any info would be appreciated,

Thanks!

I refreshed my power steering system recently. I used the driftmotion SS line and it seems to be working great. I went to napa with my old hoses suction and return hose, we matched them up so I'm not sure on the sizes. I bought a foot extra just to be safe, it's cheap enough not to be a big deal. I know driftmotion sells hoses for this as well, he sells the push lock style hose. I got the same from napa but I still use clamps on them just to be safe.

I also added a filter, there's plenty of topics on that to read. I got the filter at napa and it was pretty cheap and easy to mount up. I flushed the old fluid out and went with mobil1 synthetic ATF fluid. I cleaned the fluid reservoir really well also, the metal screen was pretty gunked up.

My power steering has never felt this good before, huge improvement(I'm sure the fluid is the cause). I didn't add the drain valve which I've seen other people do, it would be awesome to have a valve to open and flush fluid out with. Otherwise, it's pretty messy to disconnect the return hose and have fluid spray out.

Awesome, thanks man. I'm probably gonna do the same, just remove the existing hoses and take them to PepBoys or something. I'm gonna read up on the Driftmotion line, as I know high-psi PS hoses have to be assembled a certain way. I think I will remove and inspect all my lines before I purchase anything. maybe I just need new crush washers on the PS pump.

Will be doing the rack myself this winter. How did the replacement go ?

On this car, it was probably the dirtiest job I ever done on ANY car. There was so much dirt, grime, oil, and grease under and around the rack, it would have taken me days to clean. (at one point I wanted to junk the car  )

for the actual rack swap it was pretty easy. I bought new outer tie rod ends. and assembled them onto the new rack as well.

The toughest part was that the mount clamps holding the rack to the subframe. There are 3 17mm bolts that thread in from the bottom that hold the rack clamps to subframe. front and rear on drivers side left and front bolt on passenger side.

The remaining 17mm rear bolt, bolts in from the top of subframe between the PS pump and oil filter. getting the right socket extension combination to get that bolt was a task. but it wasn't impossible, just frustrating at times after being covered in grease.

Also keep in mind, try to mark & realign your steering shaft and wheel so that they go back on as close to stock as possible.

It took me an afternoon, was pretty straight forward.

Sorry to resurect this old posting, but I am trying to install the Driftmotion SS braided line to replace a leaking line on an 87 Turbo....it looks like one of the fittings needs to be turned 180 degrees for it to fit....does anyone have a suggestion on how to get it to fit, or did I get the wrong hose?

I think I snaked the hose from the top, secured the lower end first cause it was more difficult to reach then the upper. I do remember it being a tight fit and having to turn the fitting and holding in place while threading it on. I don't remember being off by 180* though, maybe flip the hose around and try again?
