power steering cuts out under braking

A few weeks ago one of my PS lines blew out and the whole system drained out. I drove it 20 miles or so before i could get it fixed. Patched it up and burped all the air out and was good for a few days. Then it started to cut out under braking, soon as I let up it's fine. Any thoughts? My car is an 87 n/a with tems if that's of any help. Thank you.

Have you checked the fluid level again? sometimes even after burping there are a few hidden bubbles that slowly work them selves out. Some toyotas (like 4 runners) have this goofy system that use the PS pump to build vacuum for the brake system (GM hydroboost system does the same thing in a different way), but i do not think supras do that, but honestly i could not say for sure.

Pump is probably hurt from running it with no fluid, line pressure is way down. How does it turn just sitting at stand still no foot on brake, does it shutter and make noise. You can hook up a pressure gauge to see if pump is running good PSI. I looked up specs on alldata but dont have it and i just cant remember the generic spec for most makes models. But most likely a new P/S pump is what your going to need.

I work on 4runners and Hilux's a lot never seen hydro boost system on them unless they have used it on foreign models or new new ones. The supra does not use it, its used mostly for diesels because they do not have manifold vacuum to operate a booster. Although some gas engine luxury cars use it like Escalades because it gives you much stronger braking force. On supra brakes and power steering are completely different systems.

It works well as long as I'm not on the brakes.

It is a little odd that its not making noise and not having issues at stand still. But still most likely the pump is weak. It is very hard on them to run without fluid.

That is what I figured. I just found it quite strange its only a problem when braking. Thanks for the input.

Yea its a little weird must be right in that middle point. But if you think about it under braking it does add a bit more stress.
