Power Questions on Exhaust, and Which to get??

Hey guys, i have a pretty much stock 7MGTE 87 supra, upgraded ct26 to 57trim from driftmotion. Now i have a couple options. Option 1, go with a complete exhaust system replacement, 605 for Tanabe Super hyper medallion, then 199.99 for the driftmotion stainless steel downpipe w/ 3 inch turbo elbow so for a total of about 800 bucks. Next option is a Tanabe downpipe with t he tanabe super hyper medallion for about...870. i dont think that comes with the turbo elbow.

Now my question is where does the performance gain come from? i dunno if it is possible to just replace the stock downpipe with the driftmotion downpipe for about 200 bucks + install and just leave the stock muffler for now until i have enough money to get the tanabe hyper medallion. i just want the performance gains for now. If someone could help me out and explain how all the exhaust aspects worked, i already searched the different articles nothing really that i oculd find to answer my questions..

Lastly if anyone else has any kind of exhaust system suggestions for me they are greatly welcomed! keep in mind its a 7mgte, 57 trim ct26, i would prefer something that isnt incredibly noisy just want a nice agressive tone when you get on it. nothing droning to hear fromt he inside. THanks

Edit: Also if anyne has experience with going from the stock system and switching to a full 3in exhaust or better yet the tanabe medallion touring set up, please share your experiences, sound clips, or just opinions/thoughts on the actual exhaust and or performance gains from the stock system

Ditch the elbow? sorry this might be noobie...but i really dont know much...isnt the elbow required? like i said i would be getting the 3 inch downpipe that driftmotion carries which is the one where the 3 inch elbow is included..my main question is whether or not ill get the same performance gain by just replacing the downpipe and keeping the stock catback because i dont have the 700 dollars to just throw at a catback system right now

Stock catback is 2.25" if I remember correctly. So you won't see a great improvement from the downpipe alone, as you'll still end up at 2.25". For best results, you might want to save up for a full 3" system, and either eliminate the stock catalytic converter or get a hi flo cat, a la Random Technology.

The DP on its own will allow for a fraction of a second faster spooling of the turbo, but as soon as the exhaust gases hit the 2.25" section, the DP will start to pressurize and it'll feel more or less like you still have a full 2.25" system.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and an exhaust on a turbocharged car is only as freeflowing as its most clogged section.

Ahh i see..so i was looking at the BIC website for the DDP, pretty much it just says that it eliminates the need for the turbo elbow. does that mean it physically eliminates the elbow so you dont need it? so how would a BIC DDP compare to the driftmotion 3" inch downpipe + 3" turbo elbow

Btw thank you for the responses

ahh yes thats exactly what iw as thinking. darn.. ok well does anyone have suggestions on a good catback? so far im either going with driftmotions 3" turbo elbow + 3" DP, or BIC DDP + the Tanabe Super Hyper Medallion. Now from what ive heard about the Tanabe is that it is pretty quiet. Now for me i do want it to not be noisy but iw ant it to be agressive as well like if i do want it to be loud and rev, for it to sound nice, any suggestions? sound clips? Thank you

hrm i see..so either the one from driftmotion..or i can ask them if they can get me a DDP or a Full downpipe. again main concern is that this is a street daily driver, first off i dont want it to be SUPER loud cuz of cops. and also as long as its OK for smog.

open ddp will be loud a recirc ddp will sound like a normal down pipe. the downpipe it self wont actually make the car loud(except for open ddp's).

there is a thread about the tanabe super hyper medallion to try and get it re produced again and its discontinued right now maybe look into that or the greddy sp which is also discontinued but can be reproduced with enough people in for a group buy.

the tanabe medallion touring is still available from tanabe but it is very quite.

hks dragger is also pretty quite too.

yea i heard from aaron that the tanabe touring is pretty quiet but if i combine that with a DDP you think that would make up for it and make it sound fairly agressive?

exhaust note and open ddp are 2 different sounds. if anything you will barely hear, if at all, that exhaust.
