Hello.
I upgraded my turbo a bit and rised boost up to 15psi.

It is very hot outside (about 29*C) and I read 65*C at idle and 82*C under full boost (4th gear pull). Temp sensor is in 3000 pipe. I have Spearco IC and 2.5" hardpipes... any advices how can I lower intake temperature? (besides FFIM, I can't afford it right now)...

Please post your intake temps (for comparsion), so I decide to do something or leave it alone...

Thanks!

I don't have a comparison, but you could get the upper hardpipes (anything after the IC) ceramic coated to keep the hot air out and the cooler air in. You can also put a spray bar on the IC. If you have the headlight washer option on your header panel, you can modify them to spray on the IC instead, it's a very cheap, effect mod, but some may consider it "cletus" ;).

thank you for advices, but they aren't applyable to me =( I can't ceramic-coat intake (see my location)... And as for IC spray - I'm going water injection soon, so washer tank will be needed for other system ;-)

PS: one more question - where can I order 4" intake? (I mean accordion replacement and long K&N filter). SupraSport and notrice.com sell such intakes but only with their turbos... 4" intake isn't listed separately =(

It's fairly simple to do yourself, a 4" tube with about a 45* bend coming off the turbo would be about right IIRC, if not, you can trim it more to get the degree bend you'll need. a 90* 4" pipe would be better as you have more options on the degree of bend you'll need.

You don't have a place anywhere around you that does ceramic coating? Bummer huh?

Mr Y.

pipe insulation. The type used for keeping the hot water pipes hot. :) works well. Won't look pretty but that will give you an idea if you are going in the right direction.

You don't have a place anywhere around you that does ceramic coating? yep =( moreover, I haven't place to buy 45* aluminium pipe... Yes, my country exports Al, but car-modifying and tuning industry is weak here... So, wanna some al? no problem - buy few tonns of it ;-(

Thanks for idea. Any numbers? (how much insulation helps) and as for appearance. I'm building not show car... but the car that will prove, that oldschool MA70 with 7M can be fast.

From suprasport's website, "4'' Aluminum intake pipe 45 degree [+$35.00]"

Are you sure you can't talk to Greg there and see if he'll sell you one for a price?

Where are all maft-pro users?
Guys, I'm really worried very much cause my turbo friends told that 80*C is too hot (they have about 48*C under full load, but not 7Ms)...

So is it normal (for 7M) or I just have some problems... If it's normal - looks like FFIM should give some more power (lowering temp to ~50*C)...

Man, the summer in Moscow can be brutal. Last time I was there it was like 95 dgrees at 95% humidity for weeks. Miserable. I don't have a solution for Mr Y but I'm impressed he drives there. The way Moscovites operate cars would scare the crap out of any sane person. Almost wreck the rented Lada several times. Being stopped at 3 am for suspicion of DUI and staring down the barrel of a machine gun for 15 minutes wasn't fun either but all it took was $20 to solve the problem. What a country ;)

:) Fortunatelly I live not in Moscow itself but 60 miles away from it.

Thank you for input, but IIRC your setup isn't stock at all (I mean FFIM etc)...

Looks like Spearco IC is shit =( Local turbo-guru said that problem is in IC itself b.c. temp is significaly higher than underhood... So if IC was good and coolered air lower than underhood temp (60*C) then air in 3000 pipe wouldn't be hotter than 60*... Sounds strange that nobody discovered it before...
PS: also my friend said that spearco-style IC should have flow separator inside, so one half of flow go through first half of core and another - through another... He referenced Corky's Maximum Boost.

Worst I've ever seen is about 20 deg F over ambient at around 20 psi measured at the throttle body inlet. Just cruising around I'm within a couple of degrees. This on a GT35R, ebay side to side IC, and Ron's intake combo. 65+C is hot, are you sure you're not heat soaking the sensor from the engine heat?

There is heatsoak... at idle sensor shows aprox. 60* If I drive without boost - temp begins to lower... If I drive at boost 3-4 gears - temp rises till 80*C... So heatsoak isn't the only problem.

I'm using the Spearco as well, I get a low of about 72F at idle on a cold day. It's usually about 105F driving normally, and I've seen it hit 195F after shutting down and leaving the hood closed.

Thats what I did. Before I couldnt even touch my intercooler pipes because of the heat but I wrapped em yesterday and Ill soon find out how much of a difference they made. Well, I already noticed that they dont burn to the touch anymore.....;)

The highest I've seen so far (while driving) is +15F over ambient. In traffic or a hot start, I've seen a more, but it always drops back done once I get moving.

For reference, my IAT sensor is near the fender on my IC pipes.

hm... sounds strange to me... how much boost are you running?

all
Today before my clutch gave up I mounted alluminium plate between IC and bumber that directs air to IC... My intake temp become 10* C lower, so I get 70*C instead of 82 after 1/4 mile pull... I like it. Moreover, I'm going to fabricate real duct that covers all 4 sides, not only lower. I hope it'll reduce intake temp more!
