( '90 turbo 5spd )

Recently spent 2500 on engine work on my lovely mk3.

Now earlier tonight I go to start up and and put it in gear when and it feels REALLY Sticky and i gotta use a whole lotta force to shift gears

mainly reverse, makes a grinding noise as if the clutch isnt completely in or something and thats after i put it in a forward gear first.

it drives, ( i did drive it home :p ) but i felt like i was applying way to much force to shift. scares the shit outta me

it shifts much better when the engine is off and the clutch is in

but wtf?

dont tell me i need a new r154. i dont have the bread.

PLEASE help. i'm 18, this is my only car i paid for myself

Drain all the oil out into a clean pan and strain the fluid through a coffee filter.

Inspect for parts.

If all appears to be aok, fill with ATF fluid. Put the car up on 4 jack stands. Start car. While in car, put into all gears, but no acceleration.

Let the car run in 5 gear (at idle if possible) for about 30 minutes to build some temp into the tranny.

Shut car off.

Drain fluid.

Fill with a 75w80 gear oil or something that is straight weight.

See if it improves.

if you want smooth easy shifting, get a w58 :icon_bigg

If it just started doing that, I would check your clutch slave and master cylinder. could have a tiny leak and now, like you said, you may not have the clutch fully engaging now.

I think U can get a clutch/pp. TOB, and alignment tool from advance for ~$160, having someone put it in for you will be the biggest chunk ($400 +/- 100) Ebay kits are fairly cheap as well.

While you have it all part (or they do) get the flywheel turned, you should be fine w/ that.

*edit*
If you want to check your clutch, take it out on a nice straight road, drive it normal up to ~50, put it in 5th and floor it. if the revs pick up pretty quick and you aren't going any faster, it's your clutch. I don't remember what happened exactly when I actually toasted a clutch disc, but I don't think shifting was a problem for me. Check the Clutch slave and MC! See if the reservoir on the master cyl still has fluid in it. if it's low, look up by the clutch pedal for any signs of leaking (wet carpet, wet rubber seal, fluid on the bar).

^ uhhh.... F

Bring it to Westport IN and we'll get it done for $500 :icon_bigg

*edit*
In other words.... find a member out in those parts to do it. $900 is ridiculous.

Did you try bleeding the clutch master and slave? It sound like your clutch slave leaked down. If the tranny works fine other than that its for sure NOT you tranny. Chances are you have low fluid in the master or the master cylinder or the slave cylinder are leaking. Its a real cheep and easy fix.

Your mechanic WANTS you to spend your money with him and will be pissed you are trying to armchair quarterback him to death. If he would have found out it was that simple after having your car for any lenght of time he would probably rather tell you it needs the big ticket repair than admit to misdiagnosing it and making you question him in the future.

THATS THE WAY MECHANICS ROLL!!! TRUST ME I KNOW!!!

They all figure that if you knew what was wrong you wouldnt be there, and their right. They can tell you anything and you have no choice but to believe them. I hope it all works out for you.

Did you ever check the Clutch Master Reservior? I have had this exact thing happen after more than one engine swap. I swapped an engine and one of my non car friends comes over and sits in the drivers seat and plays racer X, I finish the swap and can figure out why the clutch has problems. I would say your mechanic that did your motor work is responsible for adjusting the clutch properly.

What exactly did you spend 2500 bucks on? Details details details!!! We need em all.

You need to be more specific. You mean to check the level of the transmission gear lube? No, there is a plug on the left side of the tranny about mid way up. You fill that until lube runs out. Hint its not one of those cone shaped pieces of metal. I have seen more than a few trannys with chizzle marks in them like a Lube monkey tried to chizzle them out.

I will be very surprised if its not the clutch slave or master nees to be bled.
