I was driving my supra few hours ago when i noticed my temp gauge slowly rising. I pull over, pop open the hood and saw steam coming out of the coolant reservoir. I also noticed this brown liquid pouring out as well. Can this possibly be a mixture of oil and antifreeze:1zhelp:!? anyway, I shut off the engine and allowed it to cool for 15 minutes. I start up the engine, add cold water to the radiator and drive it home with no problems or any signs of overheating according to the temp gauge. I am really concerned about the brown liquid coming out of the reservoir. I am going to check for any hose leaks tomorrow. Can somebody give me any advice on what to do next? Prior before this, the engine idled above 1000 rpm. Im not driving my supra for a while... :1zhelp: ::bhg:: ?

The brown water is probably dirty coolant. If there is more water than coolant in the engine then the engine will rust and cause this. You could flush the system and put in new stuff but if you got a BHG then theres not really a point.

Could be a bhg. You're smart to stop driving it. ;)

Easy indicator is white, milky crap under the oil cap. Normally there should be NOTHING resembling white or frothy stuff under the cap so if you see anything, that's a pretty clear indicator.

Sounds like my bhg. Brownish red coolant boiling of of the reserver. The coolant system was pressurized. Good luck but it does sound like a bhg.

have you done any tests to confirm or deny the whole "oh well this sounds like a BHG" ?

I mean, cooling system pressure test, radiator cap pressure test, exhaust gas test (to test for exhaust gasses in the coolant).
Take some of the oil and drop it on the hot exhaust manifold. If it bubbles, it indicates that there is water in your oil. The oil should just smoke.

I really appreciate all the input guys! I haven't done any tests to confirm a BHG, but what i have done, as Moy suggested, is dropped a few samples of its oil onto the hot exhaust manifold. No bubbling was seen or heard, just saw smoke. Furthermore, there is none of that milky white crap under my oil cap.

I don't know any good mechanics and i don't posses any testing devices to confirm or rule out a BHG.But, perhaps this little tool may help http://www.amazon.com/Stant-12270-Cooling-System-Pressure/dp/B0002SRGWU/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

Seriously guys, Im a noob at auto mechanics. I take pride in owning a supra and am willing to do just about anything to get my 7M-GE running like a champ. I don't need a fancy 7M NA-T swap. 200 horses is all i need.
:1zhelp:

I also don't trust any mechanics. Im willing to take it to a toyota dealer and have em replace the gasket. But god knows how much that will cost....

Do a proper test for bhg. Suggest posting a thread in regional section for help. I'm not too savy with mechanics but am always very appreciative to those that have lent a hand when needed.

I rented a block tester kit from auto zone to check for any exhaust gases in the coolant. The instructions said that if the fluid turns yellow then there is a leaking head gasket. I performed the test and the liquid did not turn yellow.
But im still unsure if i have a bhg. Whenever i would drive on the freeway for 20+ minutes the car would make bubbling noise and steamed from the reservoir as soon as i turned it off. :(
What other tests can i perform?
or is it something else that's wrong?
pleas help me

You need a cap rated for 13psi. But if you have a cooling system pressure tester you can test the cap with that too. I had a pretty severe BHG and had no oil in the coolant, no coolant in the oil, the overflow would just spew coolant everytime i drove it hard. There was a small combustion leak. I did a leakdown test with the radiator cap off and as i pressurized cyl 5/6 the coolant level started rasiing so thats how i knew it was a BHG

hows your t-stat? and have you ever bled the cooling system properly? when mine started doing the same bs yours did. i found it to be a t-stat.. well on my na car.. now on the gte it was allways the head gasket... take peoples advice and dont drive it until you figure out your problem and then fix it... theres nothing worse then spinning a rod or main bearing because of a bhg..

What is up with the distrust of all mechanics , and only trusting Toyota mechanics? (PS. they are going to use stock HG torque specs and gasket)

A slight BHG can be very hard to diagnose. What you have is a very serious cooling system problem (easy to diagnose when it gets to this point). Any mechanic thats worth anything can eliminate all of the simple components of a cooling system to narrow it down to something like BHG.

Take it to someone that AT LEAST can figure out what rad cap to put on it. he may evin be able to test your old one. wink

Sorry for the apparent anger in this post. But don't bash technicians in general, this is how we make our living(some of us are honest, and willing to show you the problem so you can see and understand) (just because you don't have anyone you trust, doesn't make all tecs crooks)

You need to find someone to trust with your vehicle, as you are obviously not capable of doing the proper diagnosis yourself.

I dont know the condition of my thermostat. Ill be checking it out. Any clues on how to figure out if it went bad?
Maybe it could be a bad clutch fan? idk
I haven't done a proper coolant bleed down. I checked the cygnus website and looked at the mkiii section and found a nice little tutorial on cleaning the cooling system. i will be trying that soon.

The only reason why i don't trust just any mechanic is because of the horror stories i hear in this forum of improperly installed gaskets and what not. If anyone can direct me to a fine mechanic in the greater l.a area, ill be eternally grateful.

i checked out the t stat, it looked bad and I replaced it with stock oem one from the dealer. I also bought a new stock radiator cap. Im currently flushing out the system with distilled water. Ill be posting if any new problems arise. Thanks for all the input guys!
