POR 15 Metal Ready

so, theres a lot of rust killers out there.. and ya just don't really know which ones actually work

well today i decided to screw around with the above mentioned "por 15 metal ready"

had a small lid from a containter, filled it with metal ready, had a piece of mild steel coated in rust
dumped it in the container, metal ready only covered the bottom side (square tube of steel)

forgot about it, went back bout an hour later, all rust from ALL sides had been removed :aigo:

but just thought i'd add... what a great product!

you might want to try "zero rust", it supposedly tests better than POR 15....

I used a POR15 product (can't remember which) on some parts when putting my engine together. Coated the rusty exhaust manifold. Almost a year now, and no rust, and no cracking. I have that can in the shed, I can identify it if anybody wants to know.

I used Por15 also about a year ago on the frt apron where the battery sits and that stuff is AWESOME!! I was a little skeptical at first but very impressed by the results afterwards.

Always wear gloves when using POR15 or you'll be wearing it for a week. Also wear gloves with metal ready, I lost a layer of skin over that one...

Would this stuff work on my brake calipers and other wheel/brake/suspension components in place or would it all need to be pulled, treated and reinstalled? I put new rebuilt rear calipers on and they rusted almost immediately, and a lot of the other things are 16 year old original components. It all works well, but I'd like to make it all look like it works well, and removing all of it would be a major pita.

I'd be afraid to do a brake caliper, for fear of it running onto the rotor. It goes on somewhat loose.

i have used por 15 before and i love it. I fixed some rust in my quarters with it and when i has doing it i ran out. Every place i missed has rusted back but not a single place i put por 15.

if i remember right, Jeff Lange coated his entire rear subframe in POR 15. perhaps he'll chime in and let us know how it's doing! i've been thinking of pulling the box of my '94 toyota 4x4 and doing the entire frame with P.O.R. 15. i wonder how much that'll cost me? haha.

I've used POR15 on a bunch of things and never had one rust or had the POR15 come off. The subframe looks like it was just coated yesterday... well, aside from the crack it just got above the diff... argh.

I just bought a kit which includes the degreaser, metal ready and a quart of por-15... This stufff was crazy expensive... the kit cost me $118 CAD after taxes!!!... Insane price if you ask me. I've slapped it on places on my rear subframe that started to rust badly and around my rear fender where surface rust was developing...

The key to this is good surface prep... it must be free of dirt etc... I used it on my honda accord for the rear fenders, so far no rust. I've painted over the Por-15 and even put fibreglass ontop of it. Its VERY hard to sand down!

How hard is it to pop off the rear subframe??? It looks tempting, BUT i'm scared i'm going to break a bolt off or something since it looks pretty damn rusty.

not bad @ all- unhook brake, struts + driveshaft, 6 nuts/bolts, down it comes.

Having a Z, I'm very familiar with using rust removal/preventative products. LOL. Metal Ready is a great product. I've used it not only on car parts but tools too, works great. When I was doing some freshening up on the Supra, I removed the bumper covers and found that they had rubbed on the bumper bars and caused some light rusting in places, so I painted the entire bumper bar (front and back) with POR-15. In fact, this winter when I have the Z on the rotisserie, I'm going to remove the old under coating with a torch and scraper and then do the entire bottom with POR-15 then cover it with Herculiner roll-on bed liner. It sounds hokey, but there is a guy at classiczcars.com that did it and looks awsome and is pretty much bullitproof.
