Well, I lifted the carpet and stuff and to my surprise NO RUST!!! I couldn't find anything but specs (I had to look hard).

So on topic, has anyone had experience with POR-15?

I'm thinking of spraying the frame and undercarriage. Could I use a sound proof material over the rust proof material they offer?

Yes you can apply coatings on top of the POR-15, it is designed to be paintable. Adding both will put on quite a bit of extra weight though. If you retain the factory sound deadening plus add the POR-15 to the entire underbody it should add quite a bit of sound deadening.

I used POR-15 to stop rust and it SUCKS. Rust came back within months. In the past I used a product bought locally called "Rust Destroyer" and the rust never came back on my Mk2. I recently had to order it online since it is no longer sold near me.

Wow really?
Plus I was wondering how it would act around heat.

Do you have a link you could supply me with?

Thanks,
Matt

Well I wasn't planning on doing it (Horrible past experience).
The reason I asked is because the exhaust pipe is REALLY close to the bottom of the car, where I plan to Rust proof, along with just about anything prone to rust.

EDIT: By the way, it looks like your Supra is coming along!

To get POR-15 to adhere properly, you need to apply it by the instructions. It needs to be cleaned with their Marine Clean (or equivalent), treated with Metal Ready, and when dry thats when two or more coats can be applied, between 3-6 hours between each other depending on conditions. Its a real PITA to do correctly, especially an undercarriage. To get POR to stick to painted surfaces, they need to be scruffed/self-etching primer'd/BOTH to get it to stick well.

It is also hard to get other paints to adhere to POR-15, because of the high-gloss surface, unless you use a flat finish or use some etching primer and sandpaper.

But when you follow the steps, it can provide a real tough, high-temp resistant finish, and can seal up rust nicely. Not sure if it is ideal for what you are trying to do tho...

Check this out for more info: http://www.marine-paint.com/four-step-process.htm

POR-15 has always done well for me. it's all about how well you apply it, as well as the temperature and moisture content in the air when you're putting it on. it's a hell of a picky sealer/rust killer, but you really have to be in ideal conditions.

i used it on sections of my pickup, and the rust hasn't ever come back, and that's after two winters in the NE.

edit: 88mkIIIproject beat me to it. that's a good post. :)

did you paint over the rust, or sandblast and paint?

i used the eastwood brand 2 part converter.then i used there encapsulator and a top coat of there chassis black on my subframe's.it seems like pretty hard stuff after curing.i would have rather powdercoated the frame's but i don't have lamps big enough to bake them.

I applied POR-15's high heat stuff on my exhaust manifold and exhaust housing on my turbo. I did not use all of the other prep products that were recommended. I drove the car for a year, and it still looks great. There are a couple of spots where it cracked, but for inproperly aplied stuff on those parts, I was super impressed.

+1. You have to be REAL careful about your conditions, and for hours after you have painted too. Low temp and high moisture will have horrible results.

I have had EXCELLENT results on other projects, where I had mildly deep rust on suspension parts. I had them sandblasted, and followed the painting procedure to a "T", and now have a bullet proof, rust stopping coating. I have also screwed up and had it peel off quickly from painted surfaces, but it binds real good to rust if its done right.

You can also thin POR-15 and spray it on BTW.

you're welcome. i'm working on the exact same thing. (just got my subframe sandblasted)

i'll have to pick up a set of those RK's. (i figured they were ronnie's) after slow66 welds my subframe up for me (cracked, and to reinforce it), i'm planning on getting it powdercoated. i was origionally going to paint it, but that was before i really knew that those bushings were available. ;) now i'll remove them, and go ahead with my plans. :)
