well i just finished my hg repair and i drove it for a bit and it almost overheated

i put in a new headgasket, water pump, lower rad hose, and a new rad cap.

no leaks or anything, but i might have not gotten ALL of the air out of the system. i just put my car in jackstands and with the jack under there too (might be a dumb idea) to burp the system. so when i was burping the system all it was doing was overflowing from the radiator top. i couldnt see any bubbles because only fluid was coming out. so after letting it do this for 5 min i took it out and drove it. it ran fine, but after about 6-7 min of driving the temp started going up. i stopped for a bit and then drove it and after about 4 min it almost went up to the reds.

should i let the car run without the rad cap until no more coolant spills out (and watch the temp gauge of course) or do you think it could be a shitty gauge hopefully?

im real desparate to get this thing running smooth. im going on 1 week and 5 days now. this is getting real tiring and i NEEED my car back.

If coolant was overflowing while you were burping it...then you drove it and it overheated...did you fill it back up with coolant?

please help me!!!! i have no fucking idea what to do. i let the car run for 15 minutes with the cap off and bubbles came for about 8 min and then after that coolant just squirted out of the top. while doing this it stayed at operating temp but as soon as i put the cap on and drove it, it overfuckingheated.

Well....

Not sure what to say except..

What type of headgasket?

Followed TSRM torque sequence?

Did you torque in steps?

Head prepped?

Block prepped?

IF MHG, did you take out the rivet?

How about try removing the thing in the thermostat so that your coolant is always circulating.

So it overheated after the coolant squirted out. Put some coolant in the over flow container and let it idle for a few mins then check it again. Leave the cap on the radiator.

oem headgasket, just the head resurfaced/cleaned/pressure checked, followed all tsrm instructions, torqued in steps/sequence to 76 lbs. i plan on removing the thermostat completely tomorrow. this is okay to do right?

Check to see if its the right radiator cap ive heard of to many people putting an NA one on because there is a difference in height between the two.

I hope you weren't putting nice cold water in if the engine was up near the red....

I always like taking the hoses off back by the heater control thing and just letting the hose completely fill them (until water starts spraying out of the front of the engine) then taking the other hose off of the heater control and the same idea applies there as well. But that's just me. Sure it's water, but it cools better than air.

sorry i didnt mention i changed the thermostat as well. im thinking there might be a crack in the block becuase its doing the EXACT same thing as it was doing before i ripped it apart. there is still white smoke coming from the exhaust as well so coolant is probably slipping through the crack and into the cylinder.

Shit...Welll, all i can say is welcome to Supra ownership! I know the feeling of anger toward the car, when you have done everything right, and it was to no avail...several times, i feel that I have been on the verge of setting my car on fire, or driving it into something very hard... Hopefully it is something small though...

I would first pressure test the cooling system (you can have a mechanic do it, or rent the tester from autozone), then I would do a leakdown/compression test...and go from there

Did the block look okay?? I would think that a crack would have been pretty noticeable...Especially if it's that severe... You could be leaking coolant somewhere...

mkiisupraman18, what do you mean about adding water if it was in the red??? sorry im just not understanding. i had premixed antifreeze in it while it went into red???? not just water?? lol

i just said screw it and took it into a shop on thursday.....they didnt figure anything out all day friday so he said they'd do a compression and hopefully a coolant system pressure check on monday.

i didnt notice any cracks or anything abnormal about the block, but then again, i regretingly didnt inspect it very well. i just cleaned it up good.

we'll see whats goin on tomorrow. unfortunately its really going to be the point in time that will say if im keepin the supra or not :( i cant afford to rip it apart again

^ I thought maybe you just brought you car home, took the rad cap off, and ran your garden hose into your radiator w/ the car off. Not sure how it would effect the car with "room temp" antifreeze/water mix... Did you add it w/ the car running?

*edit*
Doing that is a cheap/EZ way to fubar a head.

oh lol no.............when it started goin up towards the red, i drove it back to where im working on it right away and just killed it and let it sit. i didnt add anything to it but a bit of coolant; and that wasnt even until i could get the rad cap off without it fucking spewing rediculously hot coolant in my face like it did the other day.

i dont really know if any is missing, i add some here and there, but then it'll end up overflowing and i'll loose it. i have an aftermarket electric fan. im pretty sure its a piece though cuz even a mechanic told me that it probably wasnt doing much.
