I am assuming you have replaced the original wire with coax.
The ground is connected to the outside shield of the the COAX. The grounding of the shielding allows any electical noise that the shield picks up to be drained to ground. This allows for the KS signal that is transmitted in the center wire to be isolated from noise. The noise could( and does) interfear with the KS signal.

Whenever an electrical signal travels down a wire it creates an electical field. If a second wire is inside the field created by the first wire it will pick up a small signal. that small signal is noise on the second wire. What the outside shielding does is pick up the noise from any ouside field. By grounding the outside shield you provide a path for noise to bedisapated to ground. This will enhance the shielding effect of the outside shielding wire.

I had this exact problem where I connected the outside shield to a bolt that was not ground. I would occasinally get a 52 after the rewire. By verifying that I connected the ground wire to true ground fixed the problem.

Anyway, never think of the body as being as good as a big wire going back to the battery negative because it isn't. Doesn't even come close and it should be clear by now how important good grounding is on the car. Every path must be as electrically "solid" as possible.

and to add to that:

this is why ive always thought it to be a better idea to run a pos and neg cable when doing a battery relocation. i know people can "get away" with just hooking the neg cable to ground in the hatch but i prefer 2 cables.

Thanks JJ, I always apreciate reading your posts +1

How bad is a code 52?-
it changes your timing and fuel( runs even richer) so performance suffers etc.
