Tonight while driving in pretty heavy rain, I once again noticed something happen that has always baffled me. With the heavy rain, comes some puddling in the road. My question is, How in the hell does water that is hit by your front wheel that is shrouded by the fender ever make it to your windshield some 12 to 18 inches back while you are running 45-50 MPH???????

Try as you might, it's gonna be real hard to explain this in a way it is believable.

Were you smoking weed or having any of it blown in your general direction? If not, I can't explain it. Sorry.

Tire hits water, water splashes, the water that splashes up in front of your front bumper gets drawn back by wind.

^ it would take 23 minutes....

*edit*
Any hole dug from any place to any other place would take you 23 minutes to fall through.

Thx, 'The Universe'.

Watch (as a passenger) other people's tires interact with water in the rain. You'll notice that the tire's leading edge makes a bow wave through the water, which displaces a majority of it forward of the tire, and outwards to the sides (the part the soaks the pedestrians). Anyway, the stuff that gets sprayed forward may get caught in the stream of air that goes up the hood and over the windshield.

Also, remember that you are moving forward faster than you've accelerated the water on the road forward, thus, the wheel blows the water far forward of the vehicle with the "bow wave" effect, and as it loses velocity, you drive into it. The approach angle of the vehicle may play a bit of effect in this (i.e. a truck may do it worse than a car).

Just a thought, anyway.
