Piston balance

I got my pistons balanced but that was before I sent them out to get coated. I got my pistons back from coating but I don't have any numbers to tell me which pin goes with which piston. The pistons and pins are new ross pistons and pins.

The question is, is it ok to just put any pin with any piston with out screwing up the balance?

The pins "should" all be the same or very very close.

If you're concerned take them somewhere with an accurate gram scale and check them.

ok, i'll take them down to check them.

this might sound like a stupid question but what is very very close? within 1mg? 10mg? 100mg? 1gram? I can go to my University and use the chemistry scale which can measure down to 0.001 g (1mg) or I can go to a supermarket and measure down to 0.01 lbs (4.54 grams), i know you said gram scale but i can always convert.

so from the response, does that mean that I can (if the pins are very very close to each other) put any pin with any piston? if so, then why does the tsrm say to always keep the pins with the piston they came out of? is it because the pins have deformed slightly do to the years of service? I'm just trying to learn something new here.

The TRSM is talking about used pistons/pins where they wear together as a pair.

Starting with brand new pins do you think Ross select fit them?
(they would have a big box of Pins)

I'm guessing you'll find they're all very close to each other if not exact and won't make a difference.

The only proviso here is I'd measure the pins to be certain they're all the same diameter (just me being fussy)

Take them to Uni to weigh.

i would weigh each pin and each piston, and pin them together so piston and pin's are all identical or very close.

that is what the machiniest did when he balenced every thing.

i was thinking post office or dealer.. but university would work good too :sarcasm:

I weighed the pins:

101.419 g
101.176 g
101.557 g
101.499 g
100.766 g
101.216 g

I'm goin to go to the Chem. E. department and use their scale to weigh my pistons. then match them together. I'll put some weights down later.
