Give it 256mb Ram a new hard drive with a faster seek time and Windows XP upgrade and that puter will smoke like never before. I did these upgrades one boring saturday on a 166 Pentium and couldnt believe the performance from the old original processor It made me realize seek time on a hard drive is most important when upgrading a computer with Windows XP. I do work like that for a living so Im speaking from experience. Also turn off 50% of your windows services that make you XP computer unsecure and you become more secure and gain more resources like more ram to use for what you do when using your computer.

go here http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/ & download cleanup. If you never deleted you temp files, you be amazed as to how much faster & better running your machine can be.

Word to the wize, run it only with the default options. You can delete all of your websites from your favorites list & also all of your passwords if you keep them in you cookies.

I take back what I said about upgrading the ram, go to dell and buy a new system for like $400 or build one from newegg parts. No matter how 'budget' the new system may be, it will still kick so much ass with win xp.

It's like having a mk2 supra with a tired 5m and you are considering swapping in a 7m, and then seeing that chevy is selling 06 vettes for like $1000

Leave the mk2's out of this.......... :icon_mad:

Dell has a sale for $299, btw, you can't upgrade it much, if any, but it would seem a helluva lot faster than anything from 2000. Just dont expect it to run battlefield2 very well.

Depends. If all you do is websurf, stick with the machine you have. Why buy a Ferrari if you never drive over the limit?

And XP is actually one of the most efficient pieces of software to come out of Redmond in many years. I run it very well on machines all the way down to 733 Mhz - it runs better on my 733Mhz webserver than Win98 did.

Fact 98% of the humans on this planet use MICROSOFT Windows, that speaks for itself, there's no chevy gainst ford, toyota gainst nissan, linux gainst unix, mac gainst pc chest beating rivalry there, just the facts man.

Windows 2k pro is one of the best os, MS has made.
I must agree with ziuggy here MS sucks when it comes to building OS, fact-Windows 98, had 15+ million lines of code.
Linux is slowly taking over the Os deal, if Mac would crawl out from under that rock, and relize that if they made stuff universal and find that macs cost to much for the average user, then they would go some where, Tiger Os is an awesome Os just its not practical for the common User to figure out how to install it on a PC.

I have the mac iso for a windows machine ;) that is unix based. Drivers might be hard to come by though. No, but i would upgrade to 2000 pro with the machine you have. I should have it lying around my house somewhere. Ill look for it. Xp pro is a good operating system don't let anybody fool you. Of course linux is better and more secure and it is also free for that matter. Try it, a little different but you might like it if you want to go that route.

Linux is better than everything else except for one fact - games. If game manufacturers start supporting Linux, Windows will be off my machine so fast, they'll hear the shockwave in Redmond from here.

However, for most people, this is not an option. If I were forced to pick from Windows OSs, I'd go XP as long as the machine had 256k of RAM and 98 otherwise.

grim ur a 98 man, shame on you, 2kpro, for less than 256ram. as for linux games, ok i can see that, but linux is a little harder on the common person regardless of which linux os u grab there to a certain degree you need to have some programing knowledge. this is why windows is so popular, its click and go thats it.

If it's just lockups, the first thing to try is a good cleaning. Pull the case sides off and blow the dust bunnies out.

If that doesn't help, move to a reformat.

Lastly, you are looking at figuring out what piece of hardware is toasted, and at that point you are likely better off just buying a new box.
