Passenger window wont go up... sometimes.

I'm pretty sure its a bad master switch on the driver's side. Sometimes after driving for 20+ mins (like on the way to work today and yesturday, and all last week), the passenger window wont go up... From either side. It doesn't seem to matter what I do, i.e. cleaning the contacts on the wiring harness with contact cleaner, or unplugging the pass switch, it just seems to start working again on it's own. When it works I can roll it up from either side, when it doesn't neither switch will roll it up. It's only on the passenger side.

Will buying a newer (used) master switch fix this, or is there a relay somwhere that is possibly going bad? There are switches on ebay in good condition for $15, so I'm going to bid when it gets closer to ending, but im wondering if there is anything else I can try in the meantime. Thanks!

I don't know for sure, but I would check the fuse box... maybe there is a fuse that is fucked up (aka barely holding together?)

That's a good idea, i'll check that tonight... I was accually thinking of just replacing them all for the hell of it... since they are all probably old as hell.

Also, I have problems with my door locks, think they could be related?

$5 says its the switches. My passenger side does this, you have to repeatedly press the switch and inch the window up. Or just ask me to roll it up for you :)

This would be useful if it was just the switch... when it doesnt work, it doesnt work on both sides. That doesnt sound like dirty contacts to me... and besides I srayed some contact cleaner (the stuff we use on the pc's at work) under the switches. If it was that, the cleaner should have made at least some difference, and it didn't. I think it's something accually wrong with the master switch unit since I believe it controls both windows.

It could be something with the wiring/relay system used to control the window motors. id check the switches AND wiring/relays

think about it 20mins of driving, lots of bumps/vibrations..

The way they are wired, they rely on one another (the switches). If one doesnt work for a window, both sides won't work.

Before I cleaned my passenger side swindow switch the driver's side could still close the passenger window all the time...

Check behind the passenger side kick panel. There is a connector down there that can come undone and cause the windows not to work. My passenger window started working randomly and I found that the connecter had pulled it's self out just barley. This caused intermittent contact, so the window would work after I went over bumps in the road, warmed the car up or just kicked the kick panel. Check to make sure all of the connectors are secure down there. The particular connector for the window is kind of high up and hard to get to.

Don't know if someone has said this, didn't read the whole topic.

But clean the terminals on the control unit! That's quite often the problem, they get dirty and corrode over time, and you get bad connections. Which explains why it would work sometimes, but not always.

Good luck.

Now that's the kind of thing I was hoping to find out on here! I dug around down there, and sure enough, it was loose. It wasn't staying together well, so I wrapped some electrical tape around the connector. Works like a champ! Thanks!

Sorry, this is a little off topic, but it looked like a good thread to pose this question.... :)

Does anyone elses windows have a lot of freeplay in the door?
eg, if the door is open and your window is all the way up, does the window have any play or is it stiff?

Hope that makes sense...
