Hi all,

I'm hearing some "popping" and other noises out of my passenger side parking brake when driving, its only talking back a little at a time but its got me worried. I do not drift/ romp on the parking brake, occasionally I will ease into it when coming to a stop in a parking lot, but that’s about it.

The past few times I had disengaged the brake I heard a "pop" out of the rear right assembly, then it would be fine, no noises and the lever would still have good resistance. But last night I heard the same "pop" and the chatter started when I began to drive down the road. I stopped at a lot and pulled the lever up and it went all the way up with almost no resistance. I have searched and found it may be a small arm the guides the shoes or spring, and that arm may be bent.

I have the TSRM and I have looked it over about adjusting the tension via the hubs, but I'm more concerned on what causes this, is it just old and weak parts, or is it from another source? If anyone has had similar experiences please post your take on it and if or what you did to correct it. Thanks!

happened to me once, turns out the spring on the shoe came off and it was hitting the inside..

just get a drum kit from autozone or something if this turns out to be the case..

Thanks for the reply, I checked it earlier today, all springs/retainers accounted for, but I did find this:

Found what was left of one shoe pad in dust and many pieces, and the other had half fall off, so yea, this was a problem. So I'm going to hit up the local dealership tomorrow and see what I can do. For now I adjusted the system to have little potential of catching the rotor as possible, and I will hold off on using the p-brake until I have the replacement parts. Ugg, one thing after another huh?

now you know why your "parking brake" is not a "slowing down in a parking lot, brake".
I normal conditions your e-brake should never slip (ie being applied as a "brake"), therefore never wear out.

Yea, when you put it like that it sounds like I'm at a 10-15 mph roll and apply the parking brake. I dont do that, its mainly when I'm in the parking spot allready and the car is just slightly rolling. But yea, its not a normal brake, just a parking brake. Thanks for the reply.

they're about $80 each if I remember correctly, luckily they last nearly forever under ideal conditions...

Yea, I got quoted fore shoes a while back for my 86 around the same price, oddly the one side was a few buck more. They looked real similar to me, but ehh, never got around to buying them before the engine went up. Thanks for the reply.
