I'm planning to paint my TT rims here soon, and in all of my searching around of wheel paintings people have done. I haven't come across anyone painting polished wheels. What I'm wondering is what would be different in the prepping process of painting a polished wheel versus painting like a set of silver TT rims, or any already other painted wheel.

My thinking is since they are not painted there should be less prep work involved, but is there a clear coat on them?

You need to sand them with maybe 600 so the paint has a rough surface to stick to. May want to check out the Bull Dog Adhesion Promoter at O'Riellys as well.

Thanks, I was figuring I would have to do some sanding. I'll check out that adhesion promoter.

Oh yeah they're gonna be black, just need to decide if I want to do flat or satin black. I'm just not feeling the bling anymore.

You should definatley scuff them down just to scratch the surface, I've never done it but something tells me whatever compund was used to polish the wheels will make prep needed to get a good sticky surface.

And imo, if you wanna paint your wheels sell the polished and get new mkiv tt wheels that aren't polished, you'll make money off the wheels and have the wheels you want.

seriously, you need to treat them to a chemical. i used ppg aluminium cleaner(dx553)
it's bascically an acid which lightlyattacks to make it more poreous so that th primer will adhere better.
in the bottle it is pure, so you gotta dilute it. you spray it on everywhere generously, and then rince heavily with water.
i too painted my mk4 wheels last summer, they were polished as well !!

I'd trade them right now for a set of black, otherwise I'm just going to paint these. They're polished not chromed.

Where were you 6 months ago.:biglaugh: No love for the chrome?

I like how easy they are to clean.

Figures I'm on this site everyday, and always seem to miss stuff like that. I have loved these wheels...for almost 4 years now. It's time for something different.

Oh yeah they clean up very nicely, my old man is into Harley's so he has tons of polishing cremes laying around, and it's surprising how shiny you can get these wheels with just a once over with a good polish.

Wet sand them with 400 grade emory cloth and then definitely use a "self etching" primer. This type of primer will bond really well and then leave you a surface the new paint will stick to.

That's all there is to it.:icon_bigg
