Ok so this past weekend my R154 went out agian.. this is the second time with in one month that i'v needed a new tranny. This time i just did a pull through 2nd gear and let out and shifted to 3rd to coast down. When it was in 3rd gear it started making a terrible whinning noise. I pulled over and when i put it in 1st gear to move it just pops out of gear and wont go. 2nd gear it will move the car but makes a terrible sound. Its also leaking tranny fluid pretty bad now. Havent driven the car, parked it right after this happened.

So is my car making to much power for the stock R154? Is it possible that maybe just the input shaft broke? Im going to have it towed to a shop tomorow to have it looked at. But i guess my question is what should i have done to make the tranny stronger and not be so likely to break agian??

roadracer4life is making about eight hundred with his r154. He has broke a few of them though.

I'm only making six sixteen to the wheels and I broke my second gear at the track sunday at the IFO.

You could get a good R154, strip it down and have everything cryo'd then rebuild it. No Idea how much this would cost. Theres always the GETRAG, but thats super pricy and is gonna put your shifter in your center console.

I'm pretty sure I saw a kit to relocate the shifter on Ebay a while ago. Can't seem to find it now though.

well i cant afford to keep blowing up trannies..lol Im hoping something simple just needs replaced in it.. but i doubt it. I'v heard even if the thrust washer breaks it could destroy the other gears.

Another thing is the 1,2 shift fork breaks, and the pieces can go into the gears an reap havoc. Marlin Crawler sells a billet fork.
You could take apart the trans and try to figure out what went wrong.

Poodles, in the link you posted, does that include all of the upgraded pieces that they make for the r154 or is that all stock parts? Just curious since I was about to start buying parts to rebuild my spare.

The R154 is not that weak. If it broke, it is from being old. Hell, I raced mine for years with 600plus hp with slicks. 800 a few times before going auto. MC makes parts now to which is a bonus now for you guys.

I agree.

yeah you keep breaking old ass worn out transmissions. whats your point. rebuild one with fresh bearings, syncros, mc bearing retainer, and actually check the clearences. i bet it will take whatever you throw at it...

example: my dads 240sx SNAPPED the output shaft in half last year. car isn't even over 300whp. why?????? because its old and fatigue over 200k on the tranny.

Marlin Crawler also offers a "race" R154.

I don't know the details on these, but it would be worth calling them to find out. Also, their customer service is great. I've bought a few little things from them over the years and have never had a problem. When I called them last week to tell them my new shifter seat wasn't fitting, they sent me a new one, free of charge.

Also, a buddy of mine that I used to work with was a hardcore off-roader. He ran a rebuilt R150 in his Taco and loved it.

I plan on eventually sending my tranny off to them to work on just as a precaution.
