Would it be possible to bring an image that's just inches from your face into focus, and then "undo" the magnification behind the image so that the world is also in focus? Along the lines of this:

Would it be possible to be able to see the "55" on the piece of clear acrylic while your eyes are focusing several feet past it? I know binoculars won't do me any good, they're in the picture to help explain what I mean. I'm going for a kind of augmented reality here.
