Whats up everyone. I've been searching around for awhile for a used Supra to buy for a project car.

Just need your own personal opinion on what you think should be the "reasonable" price you would pay for this 1991 Toyota Supra Turbo Targa 5 speed with 171,000 miles on it. Here is the good and bad I notice about this car I'm looking at:

Good
-Engine seems to pull very strong based on the test drive I done.
-Body and paint seem to be in good shape.
-Clean title and Carfax report.
-Does not look like its been in any accident based on my visual inspection.
-Car is all stock.
-Brake, steering, suspension, and exhaust seems to be operating accordingly.
-Supposedly a Toyota dealership a few years back rebuilt the engine.

Bad
-Leaks power steering fluid. Not sure whats broken (e.g. hose, pump or gear housing)
-All 4 tires needs to be replaced.
-Hood strut broken.
-Fog lights not ligting on (could be the fuse or bullbs).
-Antenena not going all the way down (could be the guiding cable).
-Interior armrest broken/ripped.
-Driver side door handle loose causing hard time opening door (could be loose screws).
-The owner/dealership has no previous work/parts receipts so no idea if HG or timing was changed recently.

The Kelly Blue Book value rates this car as in "fair" condition for around $3,100 with all the bad issues I mentioned. The owner said he will fix the power steering leak. Now given what I wrote above, what reasonable price would you personaly offer for this car?

Thanks for any opinion you can provide.:icon_bigg

i think 4K is to much.
If it had the documentation on the HG replacemnt maybe, but since it doesn't i say 3K is a fair price.

Any rust?? Did u check the tire well in the trunk?

Thanks guys for your opinions.

Sorry, but the car is 5 hours away and I forgot to take my digital camera to take a picture when I checked it out. But the attached is a pic from a ad. Also, I don't have a compression check gauge so couldn't check. But again, the engine seems to pull pretty strong on the test drive I did. There does not seem to be any rust...including the front and back wheel well area.

That time after I checked out the car and pointed out the issues, the guy/dealer would not budge on his $3,600 asking price. Now, supposedly his son owns over $7500 in bank in debt for this car and wants to get rid of it. Not sure how true this story is. I didn't check last time, but he said he has the title. If I buy, I will make sure the title does not have a lien on it.

I know I can try to low-ball him, but its not right and I know I wouldn't want someone to do that to me when I sell my cars. I probably can get it for $3K...but will going down to $2800 be possible?

no i dont think hes gonna go down to $2800 for that car, seem pretty good from your description just needs some minor repairs. and from that pic it looks like a very nice car. dont insult him with $2800. i think he can sell that car for over $3000. so just offer $3000 now and take it home before someone else gets it.

btw looks like mine almost, thats a good color.

So $3K, huh? I'll see if he'll do it or not for that amount. Thanks again everyone for your opinion.

The extra $200 would come in handy when I tear down the engine and rebuild the HG and all other maintenance stuff...:)

But looks like $3K is the winner. I'll see the the owner is willing to strike a deal at that price.

I'm sure it's very true. Hey if those are the only bad things about the car, pay what he's asking. Everything you stated is wrong with it, everyone on SM has dealt with. It's hard to find a clean turbo that's not trashed or is a Frankenstein with a bunch of mods. Buy it.

Why is everyone afraid of offending him. Offer lowballs on everything. Worst is he says no, if he says yes, you get yourself a great deal. I wouldn't be offended if someone offered me half of what I was asking. I'd just say no.

Offer him $2500 for it cash in hand. If he says no, go up a little at a time until he comes down. Worst he says $xxxx, take it or leave it, then you take it..... :bigthumb:

Show up with Ben Franklins in hand for how much you are willing to pay. Don't tell him "deal or no deal".

With that much cash in your wallet, you might consider a .45 also.

This is the advise I have given every woman I have seen buy a car. They all tell me I'm crazy. But like Tubbie said...........you don't know til you ask, and all they can say is NO!

That said, the car is worth the asking price and more if good. The problems could all be fixed in a day for $100 or so. 89+ cars go for $5000+ all the time. Trust that head gasket until it blows, or until you get ready to mod it.

Looks like most of the price range everyone is giving me is from $2500 - $3000. I think I'll work with that range. Thanks everyone for your feedback.
