Everyone i know that runs an open downpipe is a cheap cheap bastard. Ya its loud but sounds like shit, and makes your neighbors very angry. Just head over to an exhaust shop drop some cash and get it done right. I paid $235 for a 3in turbo back exhaust setup.

I had a friend that runs open dp on his srt4. That thing is annoying, and it isnt ANYWHERE near as loud as a supra running an open dp.

Oh I forgot to mention that it will get really really hot inside the car. At the 1st drift event we took it to we melted the plastic piece around the seat belt buckle. The part that bolts into the transmission tunnel. It burned my hand when I was undoing my seat belt too. Open downpipes will also shoot flames...

For those of you running open dp all the time, why do you do it?
Cause they want to.

Or cause they don't have money to buy the rest of the 3" exhaust. :3d_frown:

Mine is right now because I haven't gotten to the exhaust shop yet to hang my exhaust. My car has only been running for ~2 weeks and it only has 200 miles on it. It's been raining/snowing and will be until late this week. Until then it's open.

I haven't experienced heat issues, but I haven't run my car hard either.

Same here. I got mine on Friday night and it's been icy and snowy since.

Fair enough. When I installed my turbo kit, the downpipe had to be finished to meet the cat. I installed the kit at my house and drive it about 15 miles to get the exhaust finished but that was it. I took the dp off a couple times before just to see what it was like but put it back on after seeing how loud and rediculous it was. I was trying to get answers from those who do it all the time on a street car. Like they had a catback and took it off for good or never bought one on purpose.

I don't understand it, so I thought I'd ask.

Just out of interest, what kind of engine note do you get from running an open downpipe? Does it add anything "fruity" to the sound, or does it just a amplified version of the droning noise that comes from a stock exhaust?

mine sounded like a small block w/ open headers. I remember starting her up in my garage and my voice echoed when i was trying to talk to my friend 1 ft away from me. Went for a drive and trying to say 1 word to my passenger was almost impossible. At idle though, its is really intimidating especially when you can hear the turbo spool down.
