Also herer is the ? I got ARP studs, and it says to HAND tighten them to the block, ad HG then head. then washerand nut and turque to 90. BUT do I hand tighten them then use a socket to tighten them,or a hex key on the stud and then nut.

LOL Thanks

Yeah, the studs should only be hand tightened.

If the block is still in the car then only put the two front studs in to help align the head as you put it back on....you won't be able to put the head on if you screw all the studs in first! Once the head is on then use an Allen wrench to screw the rest of the studs in but DO NOT tighten them....you'll want to run a bottom tap in all the holes prior to installing the head to clean up the threads and to cut more threads near the bottom of the stud holes...

As far as cleaning the head goes...take the head to a machine shop and have them hot tank it!

If no machine shop nearby you can pressure wash it with a degreaser and if it's really dirty soak it first. After washing it use a WD40 spay or the like on all the metal surfaces washed to stop any rust spots.
I also recommend checking the coolant ports in the head to make sure there not blocked, a small chainsaw file works great if your gentle. I've had a couple of heads that had blocked ports from years of build up so it's worth a look.

would I remove the valve springs and all that before I wash it off?

Yes definitely! Soak those goodies in a bucket of diesel or something along those lines and clean with a brush, then before reassembly use a spray cleaner or turps just to remove that oily residue and make it sparkle. Everyone has there own process so use what works for you.
Good excuse to lap the valves before putting it all back together and get them sealing properly.Don't forget some new valve stem seals, it's a much easier job to do when it's not attached to the block. lol

If the block is in the car, you have to put the head on before even putting 2 studs in.

There are pins to align the head, the back of the head will hit the firewall if any of the studs are in.

And when you put the suds in, put the washers on then, some are hard to get on in the head when the studs are installed.

Glue the washers into the head with grease BEFORE trying to install it helps with this step.

its hard to align the head on those pins without moving the head around....i put the first two studs in in the front and i was easily able to slide the head down with the engine in the car...but thats how i had success.

I put the studs in the block and hand tightened them WITH the hex key. Then put the washers in the head BEFORE putting it on. Then re-check that all the studs are hand tight. Then torque down the nuts in 3 passes, 30-30-20.

Then again, this was with it out of the car. lol

I always lube the washers anyway to help get a consistant torque so find this makes life a little easier.

yeh i lubed my washers but still had to try to squeeze them in around the cams and the head itself. i finally got them in but it was a PITA.

also, about the hand tightening. im not sure that hand tight "with the allen key" is what they meant. with that logic, everything that isnt put on with a air gun or drill would be considered hand tight lol. i think the allen wrench is more for removing the studs later. i could be wrong though

I think it is for putting the in while the engine is in the car and the head is on, can't really use your hands to put them in. lol

well thats a good point i guess. i cant remember exactly what the directions say but i thought they said put the studs in then slide the head down over the studs. i understand that this is extremely hard/impossible with the motor in the car but that would be that the ARP did not intend for the allen holes for the purpose you suggested. im not sure that it really matters. the important thing about "hand tighten" means do not torque the studs into the block. :)
