I hope it's not a lexus...all their new cars are made out of plastic. Open the hood of an IS350 and try to find metal, just chunks of plastic covering everything.

edit: Damn you Nate!

i dont think they will be getting back into sport cars in a while.....
the market right now is in gas saving cars, family cars(suv's) etc...

you are partily WRONG!!! Toyota will most likly be making a come back. there compation has the most popular japinese sports car in the usa and japan and many other countrys the 350z. and then there are WRX's, and Evo's. All makeing money and selling like mad. It would be bad for business to do otherwise. In Car Styling magizine they were talking about it a little bit last mounth.

It looks like a mix between a S2000 and one of the TVR models. Not a big fan of a NA Supra, but I am a big fan of the power this thing will be putting out. If I could afford one when they come out it wouldn't be NA for long....

I did hear that Toyota wanted to get back into the sports car market too. Apparently the 350Z and G35 are doing extremely good. Toyota is also attempting to get a share of the very profitable American truck market. The highest profit margins are on trucks, followed by SUVs.

They are also going real strong in the hybrid power plants.

That's what the Road and Track with that article in it said. With the release and success of the 350Z and RX-8 and all other sports cars in the past few years Toyota has been left behind. I mean c'mon, the Camry Solara is considered their sports car since the Supra production stopped.

I'm doing a stock project in school and GM and Toyota are two companies I'm following. GM is selling off to become a smaller company and car maker, where as Toyota is booming and expanding (trying to take over Truck, hybrid, economy market, and building sports cars again)
Toyota is said to be the largest car manufacturer in the world soon if GM keeps diving.

i said it wont be a while till they make a sport car in a while....more suv's and sedans have been selling a hell of alot better than sports cars like 350z wrx's etc etc.....most ppl today just wanna reliable car that will get them from point A to B
my uncle is a manager at toyota he said it will be a very long time till u see a sports come out ....suvs and trucks and sedans have been a big seller......people look at reliablility and gas milage......not HP and TQ
most people cant afford a car that like 20-30 grand sports car when the gas is like $2.50 -3.00 or more in some places....
my guess a sports car wont come out of toyota until 5 years.....or until gas goes down....

The Tuscan TVR's? Those are some sick cars. Ever see Swordfish?

Back to the 'Supra' I guess all any of us can do is wait.

My friend at Toyota USA said the same thing. Of course the basic philosphy of Toyota is to make money. Sports cars don't make money unless you sell a ton of them. And the sports car market isn't huge. With the launch of the legandary Skyline in the US, Nissan is really going big into sports cars. Toyota might feel they have to compete with Nissan just to so they don't have a monopoly in the market.

Whether Toyota actually comes out with a Supra won't be fact until they actuall do. But the fact is, Toyota is developing some sports cars.

Toyota is screwing up not selling a image vehicle that showcases build quality, value and performance like the Supra has done for many years.

The MRS was a feeble attempt at best, and a terrible sales platform.

Why is it that the worlds best car builder can't see this is beyond me, but I can see why they like selling 40,000.00 mini vans, and other overpriced cars and trucks if the public is buying them. Profit.

My wife thinks she needs a van, and we have looked at all the current models. The Sienna is the highest priced of them all, followed by the Honda and Nissan vans. The Chrysler vans are never going to scourge my garage, and we likely will buy the Kia as it's the best built for the money, and has a kickass warrenty. (10 years and 100,000 miles can't be beat.) Not kidding about the 40k, the fully loaded Kia van is just about 30k, and the fully loaded Toyota is over 40k. Ouch to the pocketbook. Especially when you consider my wife cares very little about power, and style, but more about how many car seats and kids can be packed into seats, and how easy the seats fold down and are removed...

So, back on topic. If Toyota wants to pick up some sales of sports cars while the wife's are van shopping and the husbands are busy trying not to look bored, they need a sports car to grace the showroom floors of this world. (And they need to keep it simple and affordable.)

Easy recipie for Toyota's next "Supra"

1) V8 power. Get the largest displacement V8 they make, bolt on headers, free flowing exhaust and simple automatic and manual transmissions. (They already have them in the parts bin, use the truck versions.)

2) Solid chassis. Again we are lucky to have one in the form of the IS350. Just make it a two door, style it like the Supra should be, minimal wing, lower front air dam, good lines, minimal overhangs front and rear and a dash that will make a Camry blush. (Quality part, not the plastic hell the MK4 is.) They have plenty of parts out there, and some minimal work would allow use in the Supra with minimal cost associated.

3) IF Toyota needs a clue, do a retro MK2 with V8 power, style the dash after the MK2 interior with gauges out of the Lexus line, reproduce the seats from the MK2/MK3 as they are excellent, even throw in the air bladder if you want for the lumbar... Retro is cool remember.

This "Japanese Mustang" would kick ass, should be an easy 350hp machine, have IRS and all the other suspension bits from the IS350, yet have a shorter wheel base to keep it lighter. No targa top offered. Offer the sunroof as an option too. Only do power windows/locks and other stuff to keep the costs down. (Don't have to design manual windows if you do not offer them.)

How about it Toyota? Build us this car, and keep it under 25k new fully loaded. Use truck parts, and the IS350 off the shelf parts and floor pan.

Nice idea, but it's never going to happen.

Next Supra if it does come around will be a 50k+ mediocre performer that the stock Vette will smoke, and the Z06 will shame.

I agree with adjuster... a retro mkII would be pretty slick... but im not sure about the v8.... Seems like the car would handle like more of a pig with a big ass v8 in there... stick with a smaller turbo i think...
