I know surpas tend to eat a little bit of oil so I i try to stay on top of where my oil level is by checking it every time I fill up the tank. The problem is I cannot get a good reading on the dip-stick... so i never have any idea how much oil is left!.....any ideas, info, insight, would be greatly appreaciated

Drill 3 super small holes in dip stick at the bottom, top and center of the XXXXXX marks. This way it will be easier to read. If there is oil in the bottom and center hole oil level is good. Oil in top hole there is too much oil in your system, and if oil is only in the bottom add 1/2 qt. If all holes are empty start saving your money to rebuild you engine.

Go buy the updated dipstick from Toyota. It's loads easier to read. That's what I did. :)

No prob. This is the only free trick, and it works GREAT. Other wise like Shaeff said the updated dip stick is eaiser to read also.

You go a head, I will save my oil from cavitation, aerating, and swinging the crank through my oil by running it at the correct level ;) It takes all of 10 sec. for me to check my oil level before I start the 7m.

Quite a few people on here (jdub "the oil expert" included) run 1 quart over full. It's the best way to ensure that the pick up tube to the oil pump is always submerged in oil; especially during hard cornering or hard braking.

By the way, running 1 quart over will not be having your crank hitting the oil in the pan. Check out one of jdub's post on the subject.

It's not a SBC where the crank is hitting the oil (that happens at the proper fill level on a SBC FYI...), the 7M crank is quite a distance from the oil in the pan.

drjonez informed me about 5 years ago to keep the oil 1qt over. :) I've been doing it ever since. Never had an issue.

Years ago CarCraft put a SBC on an engine dyno and monitored power and oil pressure. They adjusted oil levels and found that running a couple quarts low gave them better oil pressure and power because the crank was hitting.

Air in the oil from the constant beating shows up as lower pressure. I've NEVER seen this on my car, even when I was 2 quarts over...

Also you have to think how much oil is getting pumped around inside the engine, up in the head and turbo/lines and oil cooler circuit while the engine is running.

That said, Im running a quart over... Sometimes over that if I know im going on a spirited drive on some twisty roads with some crotch-rocket friends.
