so today i start my car and i hear a loud clicking coming from the front of the motor. turn the car off and i find the timing belt is a bit loose. so i try to tighten up the tensioner.

i start the car back up and i hear a loud crunch. turn the car off and the timing belt is loose as hell

so i take off the crank pully and lower timing belt cover. i find the oil pump gear is toasted. the thing was in like 5 pieces. how the hell does a metal gear break??

old age?? i hear this happens to dsm's but i have never heard of this happening to a 7m.

IF anyone out there has a oil pump gear. let me know asap. i need to get this car back on the road as my other car is broke down as well

yea, i will post pics, the car was running normal; then the pully took a dump.

the oil pump shaft seems fine, spins freely with my fingers and there is no play.

i do run with the upper timing cover off, maybe a rock fell in there or something.

however now i'm in a pinch.

what are the chances a local toyota dealer will have this part

Was there any discoloration in the cracks to indicate an old crack/metal fatigue?

My opinion is metal fatigue and that it could be the gear was not designed for todays boost levels..:)

This would be a good time for someone to step up with an aftermarket gear..It might be a good product...

yes there was fatigue. basically the middle part that bolts to the oil pump shaft broke away from all the spokes.

this metal is very brittle and being 18yrs old doesn't help either

We had it happen to Mello's car once while we were boosting on the highway. Broke into 13 pieces iirc. Shredded the timing belt, and left us needing a tow truck. Luckily we had a couple spares lying around, and napa had a t-belt. Back on the road in no time :)

But anyways, that gear does suck, and i wish a billet one were made....

eek... who said billet gear? huh? where? ;)

That seems a logical solution from my standpoint. I would hate to have that happen to me.

Something caused this.. time for a root cause analysis.

I would guess the oil pump driveshaft froze for a second or so, the stress between the belt pulling on that gear, and the not wanting to turn driveshaft snapped the gear into bits.

Did everyone that had this happen have the cam gears exposed?

bob-monk said that he didn't have exposed gears in his thread...

Wow, I had to double check the date on this thread to make sure it wasn't the same one! That's pretty incredible that 2 have had complete failures in like a month now...

I don't know if a billet one would be necessary, if its the gear and it has fatigued then replacing it once in a while with a new one would solve that. One thing that could be possibly causing it is the bearing on the oil pump drive shaft siezing like someone else mentioned previously; possibly improper install or something during a rebuild?

Necessary? Two complete failures in recent past deem it necessary in my eyes.

I'd rather have a nice billet one, because, well... strength of course ;)
