Oil pump drive shaft failure.

hopefully this isn't the source of my knocking noise. At this point i doubt its RK since i drove 500 miles and nothing bad happened, well besides me losing all the gear in my trans except 4 and R.

How long had the knocking been occuring? Did it happen all within a week or did it take a long while to really show its ugly face?

On mine i never herd it till it was there and bad sounding.

I am making a fixture and buying the tooling to mill 6 oil groves in each side of the retension plate. I will be buying a few new ones from toyota along with the collars and doing the work and selling them as a kit. I hope to have the first few done with 2 weeks. If not sooner. My motor is waiting for one so i can build it.

Sounds like the thrust washer in your transmission quit.


As for the OP, I have seen this happen a few times. Not exactly sure what caused it, but now we tend to use new oil pump DS from the dealer. Thats what I plan to do to my motor.

Ok well here is what im gonna be doing. You can send me your oil pump drive shaft and i will mill the oil groves in it reassemble it and make suer everything is in spec and ship it back. Or i bought the last 5 retension plates in the U.S. im gonna mill the groves in them and get the retension collars and sell them as a kit. What do you guys think?

To find out the oil pump ds was going from its proper spot in the block and walking back untill it hit the timing cover by the block. Which also caused the ds to make contact with a rod wearing a chamfer on the ds and a grove in the rod. i have found out what happend. The front part of the ds where the seal rides and the retention plate sits. well the plate actaul wore away the front 1/4" of the seal diameter which allowed the ds to walk back and forth in the block causing the knock and alot of metal shaving in my oilpan and whole motor. The ds bearings are perfect size and in spec as is the ds bearing od's and there ways no up/down side/side slop or play only in and out. Has this happend to ne one before? Ne ideas what caused it?.

Trashed ds on the left good stocker on the right. As you can see they are the same height and every thing is the same except that top od that is worn away.

This actually happened to me a few days ago sigh :( didnt even know this was possible until it happened and i came searching to see if i was the only one. Havnt pulled out anything as yet but i have realized that the shaft is going in and out and the motor is also making a noise. Its sooo depressing, just when i was on my way to 16psi. :'(
