Ok, about to put in my freshly built 7m. I am looking for information, but I can't find it anywhere, even after searching for 2 hours. :naughty:

-Does the 87 7mgte M/T Ecu read the oil psi sensor in the block, or is this strictly for the dash gauge? I would like to use an aftermarket gauge to keep track of this.

-Is a boost sensor necessary for the Ecu as well? (I'm thinking no.) I will be using an aftermarket gauge to keep track of this.

I could swear there was more information I needed, but I will ask once I remember it... :nono:

Edit: I remember now - Is there a difference between the 7mge and 7mgte EGR system?

Also, until I get my oil cooler hooked up, is it possible to block off the oil cooler pipe near the filter? I am asking merely because it may take another week to get my cooler, and I will not be driving, or at least not driving hard until after the break-in period. Basically, bypassing the oil cooler setup just to allow it to run. We can't have those areas open, now can we? :biglaugh:

adding a bigger oil cooler while still keeping the stock filter head may not give you the expected results. Can you block it off and run it, yep. Id add a full flow setup though. (look in oil section stickies)

- Oil pressure gauge is used by the ECU
- boost sensor is standalone and has no effect on ECU
- If you don't have a cooler, loop a line from the filter housing to the oil pan as a cap might just blow off causing a massive loss of oil (BAD)

As he said ^^ a larger cooler with the stock pressure based cooler circuit isn't going to be very good

Oh I wouldn't go larger, I would go stock just for safety on keeping the oil cool. BUT I think I am going to upgrade the cooler circuit to what the stickies suggest. Until then, I will run a line from the outlet up top straight to the pan. Ill just drive gently to keep the temps down. Then again, its cold here so that should help a little for now.

How about that EGR?

So as far as oil psi, I could just adapt an aftermarket oil psi gauge to that point and put the gauge in the stock dash for cleanliness? Sweet.

Dammit... I guess I can put on the cooler in the back of the head and then just block off the port on the intake manifold until I have the necessary parts. So far, this is shaping up to be a great build!

if the aftermarket gauge sender is small enough (mainly height) you can fit it next to the powersteering pump. There is a port with a plug in it about 6" in front of the stock oil pressure sender.

guessing that was worded wrong?

Personally, I would not drive without EGR. And definitely don't drive it hard if you do. The USDM motor is tuned to run with EGR and will quite possibly get detonation if you put it under a load without EGR.

egr only works under moderate load till 4000rpms. No benefit under wot but its a huge safety margin under light throttle boost regions. Increased mpgs, cooler egt's, detonation supresion etc...

higher octane should cover the detonation portion. All of this is keeping in mind that your planning how you'll drive daily and mod accordingly. Id put it on since the motors out though...

Fixed that for ya ;)

I'd install a full flow T-stat controlled cooler circuit...but, what do I know :icon_bigg

Oh I plan on going that route jdub, I just can't do it right this moment due to budget and time constraints.

I plan on NOT driving the car with the EGR, but I may have no choice if I can't find one before next weekend that is within my budget.

As for the sensors, I am putting in new ecu temp, temp gauge, and oil psi sensors because I do not have $300 for the gauges I want to put in my dash. lol

So far I am a hair's breadth from finishing this. My final worry is.. well... nothing. That covers ALL of my bases. And I have everything else. I'm just not looking forward to installing the turbo dash piece... Unless it's easier than I think.

Thank you for all the help guys! It was kind of difficult finding that information, and I hope this helps other n/a chassis with 7mgte guys like me.

The only difference that I've found in the EGR system is the EGR modulator. The GTE's uses a single port system and the GE's uses a dual port. AFAIK, the GE's modulator *should* work fine if you place a breather/filter on the "R" port and plumb the rest as normal.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Just remember that if you pull the old oil pressure sending unit out that the thread pitch is different than what usually comes in the gauge kits. I put in an autometer unit and didn't know this and it leaks a bit right now. I went on autometer's sight and found the adapter fitting for this. Deployed to desert right now so I haven't had time to fix it yet but will once I get home I am. I hate oil leaks. Other than a pain in the A$$ to get to the sending unit my guage reads just fine and it isn't connected to no ECU so not sure if there is another method that the ECU reads oil pressure.

Perfect, thank you guys! I figured the thread was different so I was planning on using an adapter. Right now though, I am using all stock sensors, just new sending units. I will upgrade once I have the spare $$$, trying to get an apartment here in a few.
