Oil pressure issues. I'm running out of ideas...

Manual. I just drove it up and down the street again and the tap is slightly louder :(

It's on all the original clutch/flywheel components except for new flywheel bolts and a new pilot bearing. Would an out-of-balance clutch assembly make a tapping noise...?

Loose flywheel sounds EXACTLY like rod knock. Been there, done that. :)

Pretty easy to check - or it was on the car I worked on. Pulled one of the clutch inspection covers, then rocked the crank back and forth a bit using the main pulley bolt up front while a buddy checked through the inspection cover. It was easy to tell that the flywheel was slopping back and forth on the end of the crank by a few degrees.

Unfortunately that test is only so good.

If you do the test and it's obviously loose, fine. But if you do the test and it looks ok, well, you're not out of the woods, because it might be *just* tight enough to pass the test, but not to stop the rattle.

Worse, it could be rattling because a single bolt has backed out ... or if your name is Duane, it could be because 3 of your flywheel bolts have snapped off their heads!

If you're even slightly low on Oil and have to get on the brakes hard at high speed you can't RK these motors with the stock pan.... ask me how I know :(

Yeah I check my oil like crazy! I have a leak coming from the turbo side of the motor that I can't seem to trace... It's quite annoying! It's too hard to see either up from the bottom or down from the top.

I know you said that the sound is coming from the rear of the motor, but also, a loose crank pully will definately gives you RK sounds.

Checked that, it's not the pulley :) That would be a tough one to track down if it was though!

edit: A thought just came to me! If my flywheel were loose, wouldn't the noise change when I engage/disengage the clutch?
