FIX IT!! PULL THE MOTOR OR DROP THE CROSSMEMBER THIS WEEKEND AND FIX IT

i didnt and i paid for it with rod knock. mine was leaking like it had a HOLE in the pan.. and i was too stupid about supras at the time to know better. now my engine is out and i am in the middle of a complete rebuild! then again what better an excuse for building up a supra motor than rod knock! :biglaugh:

anyway, there is in fact a gasket on there and it is in fact cork. i was told by curt from elmhurst toyota the same thing, that there is no p/n for the gasket and to use sealant... but sure enough i pulled my pan and there is a cork gasket on it.

i would use the best sealant you can find... cork sucks.

Then someone used an aftermarket cork gaskets when they tore it apart before you bought it. Cork gaskets suck! It WILL eventually leak. Figgie is 100% correct..use something like Right Stuff.

Must be why they've been successfully used since the dawn of automobiles huh?

I've never had one leak and that includes the three I've put on 7Ms. It's a simple gasket, one that doesn't have to work very hard at being one. If it leaks it was put on wrong, over torqued, or the pan/block wasn't inspected. Same with the valve cover gaskets. It's wrong to blame a part for the shoddy workmanship done by those using it.

FIPG isn't inherently superior. It's simply a way to reduce manufacturing costs and improve efficiency. For example a robot can dispense FIPG far easier than it can handle a gasket.

i'm not sure why you felt the need to drive this home. i never said i thought curt was wrong, and i never said there is a toyota part for this gasket. i clearly said cork sucks, use sealant in my post. all i said was that i had a cork gasket on my pan, which i did.. so it seems like you are calling me a liar here :)

look in some of the non-toyota gasket kits out there.. plenty of them come with oil pan gaskets. i never said they were good, i just said they exist and that one was on my car.

cheers

All the "gaskets in a tube" that I have used for an oil pan have leaked.

The cork works great, its just it has to be torqued and torqued correctly or it WILL LEAK.

Any thing over 5 ft lbs is kililng a cork gasket.

ok you're right

i should say.. there was a gasket on mine and it was cork and that probably was the reason it was leaking... and i will be replacing said gasket with Right Stuff as per recommendation of toyota parts guy

That's the problem, people over torque a cork gasket and it fails. The gasket is then blamed for the failure. As JJ said, cork gaskets have been used for years on various motors...they will work fine, if you install correctly ;)

I used Right Stuff on my pan...didn't have a cork gasket in the Toyota kit. Hasn't leaked at all and was easy to apply since it's in a aerosol container.
