hey what's up everybody
was gonna change my plugs/ wires the other day, pulled a wire and found the well had like 1-2 cm of oil just hanging out. my question is, is this problem caused by bad valve cover seals on the 7m, or is it something way worse?

Do the valve covers have the screws in them? If so replace the screws with 10mm bolts I believe and that should fix it. Mine did the same thing when I rebuilt the motor.

Might as well replace the valve cover gaskets as well, thats why theres oil in there to begin with....unless you already replaced them and didnt replace the screws.

Stainless hex cap heads look a lot better ;)
And the threads are M6x1.0, 27mm long (30mm will work)...not 10mm.

yea, clean out that oil w/ an old turkey baster, works great for me so i dont pour oil in the cylinders.

I just bought new gaskets from toyota and new screws w/ the rubber washers they have and havent had an issue for years. Just remember the reason they used screws in the first place is to make sure you dont overtorque them, its easy to overtorque and strip the hole on an alluminum head when your using hex heads so if you switch be wary of that.

Yeah most likely the valve cover gaskets.

Rarly... could be the PVC hose connectors to the valve covers themselves. :dunno:

Just food for thought.

Wow, can't believe nobody mentioned it.

What about the No.3 cylinder head cover? I know for a fact they like to leak from those 4 14mm allen head bolts. I've seen more No.3 cylinder head covers leak than valve cover gaskets leak on MK3's.

yes, im surprised this is the only response about the no.3 cover. i just noticed the same thing when i started some work today and it looks like it was leaking from where the big ass bolts go.
is there a gasket for thing cover thing? is this a commonly stocked product, or do i have no choice other than goin to the dealer for this?

You won't need an impact wrench to remove the oil gallery plugs. And I concur on the 15ft/lbs, TSRM states 13ft/lbs, yet when I deleted my no.3 cover and torqued them to 13, a few months later they started leaking again.

The part you need is the Number 3 Cylinder Head Cover. It's a gasket and a cover all-in-one. Pretty lame. Or, if you have some ingenuity, you can delete the number 3 cylinder head cover altogether.

Good way to clean oil out of the plug wells is get a shop Vac with an attachment small enough to go into the hole and fit around the plug. Spray a bunch of degreaser in the wells and vacuum out. Clean rest of degreaser and oil out with water. Works awesome.
