I am just finishing up a rebuild on my 7m, and i had a couple questions. There are two hex socket oil gallery plugs on the front and back of the engine block, does anybody know the torque spec for these? I have searched the TSRM and cannot find the spec for these plugs. I made them tight with a light amount of sealer, but i do not want to overtighten them and crack something.

Also, the block has been hot tanked, and i believe the core plugs in it right now are the originals (bought the block after it had been tanked). Is replacing the core plugs necessary? I see the cooling passages seem to be relatively clean and the plugs do not seem to be damaged in any way, and they are Toyota steel plugs. I have read numerous threads about failed installations, so if i can avoid replacing them i think i could avoid more unwanted problems ( i do not have the proper tools). Also, if they must be replaced, does the front one under the timing cover require special tools? It seems to be inverted( convex side out). I have rarely heard of anyone replacing this one, even though it seems to be just as suseptible to failure as the others.

My last question is about the seal between the stock filter head and the block. In my gasket set i have a large o ring that fits in the groove of the filter head, but does not fill the entire groove. The seal i took out of the filter head when i took it apart was square cut and fit entirely in the grrove, is this how it is supposed to be, or was the one i removed just a deformed o ring? Do i need to go to Toyota for this seal?
Thanks for any help.

I would say torque them somewhere between 35-45lbs. Just because of what the heater union on the back of the block is torqued at.

First, the plugs are pipe thread, so you want them to be pretty snug in their holes, the threads seal better the tighter they get. But as for a spec, I never used a torque wrench on it. More of a "good feeling" tightness.
As for the core plugs, if a block gets hot-tanked, the acids in the solvent eat away at the seal they create, which leads to seepage or possible blowout. I would highly recommend replacing them. A machine shop shouldn't charge too much to do this, as it's pretty easy.
Last, that o-ring in the filter head was originally a round o-ring, but with time, heat, and oil, it deformed into a square shape.

DO NOT GUESS, this is how people fuck up their cars. :3d_frown: It is sometimes best NOT to say anything if you can't give an accurate specification.

18 nm or 13 foot pounds. Add a little sealant on the rear as I remember it being a bit longer. No sealant needed for the others.
