I figure WIX is better because one-its more expensive, two-i couldnt get it at k-mart. three-it wasnt at kragen four-it has a little spring just inside the opening, and whatever that does, it must be better than the Bosh because the bosh didnt have that. bypass valve maybe? not sure how they work, but its extra parts, extra assembly, (more money) and wouldnt be there unless it was a better quality filter. plus, it was larger than the fram, most likely meaning better filtering surface area.

I cant say which is better beyond that because i have never payed for oil analysis, or cut open my filters to look at the insides. from my observations however, WIX is the best out of the ones i've had.

LOL...don't exactly use this logic myself when buying a filter, but the Wix is a very good design. That spring valve you saw is a bypass valve designed to allow oil to continue to flow if the filter clogs or if flow exceeds filter capacity. The Wix has it at the opening of the filter, most others have it inside near the dome at the top. The advantage is if the Wix goes into bypass, you don't have the oil going through the filter at all and picking up contaminates.

Both the Wix and PureOne have very good anti-drain valves as well. The PureOne filter media is finer and has more pleats than a Wix so it does filter a bit better. Either is an excellent choice IMO.

Don't knock a filter because some of the discount stores sell them. The SuperTech WalMart sells is actually a darn good filter...heck of a lot better than a Fram. ;)

Grim - You are correct, the Napa Gold is a Wix filter.

TOYOTA FILTERS ARE THE BEST FOR THE 7M

Jeez, based on that I'd better run right out and buy one.

I've given up the oil and filter thing but good job jdub. Got that Trasko installed on the tranny yet? Also right about the SuperTech at Wally World. An excellent filter made by Champ Labs and you can't beat the price. Too bad the orange can is taking over at most Wallys. Btw I recently switched to a 20W. My engine is doomed for sure ;)

Got the filter head installed and running a PureOne at the moment...got about 700 miles on the filter. Figure I'll run it another 1500 miles or so and switch to the Trasko. I've noticed the tranny is shifting smoother...it's less abrupt with this modified valve body I've got. I plan on cutting the PureOne open to see what filtered out ;)

What oil is the 20W? Notice any additional valve train noise?

While the Toyota Resin filters are great, I'm not sure they're worth the asking price....
IMO Wix or PureOne is just fine to use in any application alone. Bump it up with a dual remote bypass, and use a Trasko in conjunction with a Wix, and you'll be the king of simple oil filtration.
Go further and do the canton/mecca setup, if you want. It's definitely worth the money, especially if you've got a lot of time/money into your engine.

lol jetjock. You've tried, those of us with a clue dont have to ask. I know when I have a question about oil, I do one of 3 things. Sort through the links you've given me(as they're stashed away safely in my inbox :D), search your threads about oil/pertaining to oil, or search jdub's threads about oil/pertaining to oil.

jdub: I've got the VPRacing oil in both my subaru and my brother's 93 maxima, and it's working it's magic. The maxima always had this VTC knock that would go away periodically, but for a short time, and would always come back. Well, now that I've convinced my brother to use good oil and filters, and it's now filled with VP oil and a CarQuest filter, the knock/valvetrain ticking is now gone and hasn't come back :bigthumb:

:)

That VP oil is good stuff...pure ester base...jeez, what more can you ask for.
Good to hear it's working well for ya ;)

It's nice not to be clueless. Most people would rather die than thing though. Heck, some even wannadie ;)

Dub, it's as clean as it's gonna get by now so I'd stick the Trasko on. Funny how some claim the PureOne is too restrictive for engine use. Putting aside oil pumps are positive displacement look how easily the PureOne flows everything the tranny needs when used in that application. You can bet it's not in bypass either because I defeated the bypass when I used one just to be sure. It won't show much when you autopsy it, not because nothing there but because it's hard to see due to the media color. The Trasko's white media will definitely tell the tale.

Latest oil is 5-20 PP. 8.5 CTS @ 100. Full disclosure forces admission of blending one quart of the VP Grp V we bought on that clearance deal so it's probably a bit over 9. No valve train noise and none on start up since it gets up there quicker, something important on OHC engines. I anticipate zero problems. I like how the engine revs with this stuff too. Too soon for a fuel economy check but I don't expect to see much there. Haven't decided whether I'll go back to GC when summer rolls around but I likely will.

haha, i knew someone would like my almost senceless method of determining if something is quality.....hehe

basically i've been told its better because i already looked into this subject. that is exactly why i bought the WIX.

but i have to say it does look to be built a bit better.

thanks for the explination of the internals. my fuzzy logic wasnt quite right, but it did prove half correct!! you have to give me that much :naughty:

Oh, and you cant forget that the Wix is white, so its easy to see. i had a difficult time seeing the bosh ones because they're black, and when its under the exaust manifold its helpful.

do people usually remove their filters from the top or below?? (not at a quick stop...when you do it yourself)

i've always gone in from the top, can it be done from below?

Just bought two ST Tech filters for my new FZ1, will use Rotella T Synthtic on the bike as I'll change the oil every 1500 miles or so. (Gear box use as well as the motor tends to break down the oil faster from what I"ve read.)

Supra's new fill is Redline 10 quarts, Canton/Mecca full flow depth filter, and Oilguard bypass. Should be good for awhile. :) In fact, I'll have it tested in this next year, and determine if it will need to be changed or not.

For my cars, Wix/Napa filters in the Q45, and stock Audi filters for the A8. (I'm looking for a better replacement filter for the A8, but have been getting them done at the dealer since the computer has to be reset...) Oil last time around was Rotella T synthetic, will use Mobil One this time. (Use up what I have left that used to be run in the Supra before I found out Mobil One is now just a group III oil.)

Oh, in the Q45, I just put some Rotella T Synth. and mixed in some ST Tech Synthtic from WalMart! LOL Great deal on that stuff, 5 quarts for less than 14.00... Can't beat that with a stick IMHO.

Speaking of transmission filters, I was looking at a wrecked Subaru Tribeca, and noticed it has a factory spin on adapter for the transmission. Very cool indeed. I'm thinking of adding a Canton/Mecca remote filter to the transmission cooler lines on the A8. A used Subaru one for the Q45 would not be a bad idea if I planned on keeping it very long, but it's become the "beater" for the daycare and my wife to drive.. LOL)

Here is my version of filter heaven. (Blue inline filter with the AN10 fittings on the apron is a Canton/Mecca full flow.) Stops particles down to about 8 microns, and has no bypass, so all the oil is filtered all the time. And it flows more than any paper type spin on filter, so there is less pressure drop even when dirty. (Green filter with the AN4 fittings and a sample port is from Oil Guard, it uses a wound cotton media depth filter, and stops particles down to one micron or better.) According to their website the average auto engine will pass most of the oil through the bypass filter about every 45 min. of use. Between the two excellent filters, and the Group V oil from Redline, this motor can't get much better oil or filtration IMHO.

gilbert, az
well i picked up a napa gold filter today. i thought i grabbed the wrong one though when i opened the box. the filter is huge, well huge compared to the frams ive been using.

i guess im never going back to fram again and stick with napa until i move up from spin on.

About the same setup I went with thanks to your posts and my research. Don't think it can be beat short of a drysump setup.
