Reason I ask: Toyota OEM filters have the bypass valve on the dome end...if it is stuck, it will allow oil in the outside chamber then exit out the center hole, but not through the media. I'd cut the filter open for more info...sounds like (since you had oil pressure) the filter bypass was functioning.
If the filter head cooler relief valve was stuck, you would have noticed a significant drop in oil pressure.
