Oil filter SPARKLY CLEAN! after oil change WTF!!!

New oil filters are very lightweight.
You should easily be able to tell if there is any oil in it.

RPS - Is there any oil inside the inner tube at all? Did you cut the outside case off the filter to see if there was any oil on the outside pleats?

Reason I ask: Toyota OEM filters have the bypass valve on the dome end...if it is stuck, it will allow oil in the outside chamber then exit out the center hole, but not through the media. I'd cut the filter open for more info...sounds like (since you had oil pressure) the filter bypass was functioning.

If the filter head cooler relief valve was stuck, you would have noticed a significant drop in oil pressure.

I thought all oil that goes to the bearings etc MUST go through the filter, so if he had ANY oil pressure doesn't that mean it went through the filter? Also, if the relief is stuck doesn't that just dup directly back to the pan meaning no oil to the bearings etc?

There are 3 relief valves:
- One on the pump.
- One on the turbo filter head that supplies the cooler (this is the one that dumps to the pan).
- One inside a conventional filter...also called a bypass valve. This one allows oil to freely flow if the filter is clogged...un-filtered oil will be supplied to the bearings.

If this is a NA motor, there is no cooler relief valve. It also means this thread is in the wrong section

Ah, i thought we were talking about the cooler relief. Even if the filter bypass valve was stuck open there would still be oil in the filter, i think the original poster is mistaken when saying its completely dry, doesn't really add up. Maybe you picked up the new filter by accident? lol

A Wix filter (NAPA Gold too) has the bypass built at the filter intake/output holes. That filter would have little oil in it if the valve was stuck open from the beginning. The valve design is also one reason why I like Wix filters

so i didnt have a chance to cut open the filter, but i did loosen the new filter on there and crank it and sure enough oil started coming out so im guessing that it was because i raised the passenger side and i let if sit like that for sometime b/c i was doing something else at the same time, thank you all who helped me figue this out
