Purchased a clean 1989 MkIII auto for my son’s first car. Body has 165xxx miles with a second engine with 77xxx. Here is my problem. My wife wanted to try car out, drove it in second gear on the interstate at 70 mph in 2nd gear. (6000 rpm), thinking that it was in drive. Car ran hot, rear heater hose blew, lights came on , steam came out and she pulled over. Flat bedded car home. Replaced hose, coolant, started car. Car started with a loud bang, ran at 1200rpm with a vibration that caused exhaust shield to buzz. At rpm above 1200rpm very loud rod knock. Only ran engine for a very short time.
So suggestions, what happened? BHG or something else. Engine seemed fine when run without hose connected. (just for a minute to re park car)
Should we rebuild, replace with used JDM engine or a rebuilt block?
Money for this young man is very tight. Any non flaming comments welcomed.

Sounds like bhg. Prolly Ran good cause no coolant was in the combustion chamber. Can rent a compression tester at krafen or something. Can also buy a block tester.

First, welcome. :)

Now a few issues:
1. How much oil is present? If its low, you may have killed the bottom end (bottom end might have been dead anyways, the redline cruise just brought it to an end quicker). If the bottom end is toast, that means a rebuild. Might as well do everything. It can be done super cheap if you do work yourself and are capable of pulling an engine.

2. If the bottom end is ok, you may have induced a bhg. This involves a partial rebuild and is far from a car killer. Could be done in a week if you're an amateur.

3. Maybe its actually fine and you're hearing a non-internal component. More diagnoses is needed.

Good luck!

Ah! Forgot the other piece of advice. Steer clear of jdm engines. Even rebuilt engines from an engine company are iffy. Id rebuild what you have if you've got the ability or if you're willing to learn.

Also find a good machine shop. Not the cheapest one. There out there but sometimes hard to find.

i vote for a rebuild
cost of my rebuild is close to $1,000-1,500...includes machining block/head, npr pistons, upgraded oil pump, gates t belt, mhg, engine gasket kit and other misc items

the cost of a jdm 7m is 1200-1400
to me paying that much for a engine, is out of the question(that could possibly have issues that nobody knew about)

Is it blowing out white smoke? When you look at the oil cap, is there water mixed in with the oil? You say you can hear rod knock? If you can, then it's time for a rebuild. I wouldn't spend my money on a used block. I'd rebuild the one you have if you know of a reputable machine shop. The one I use charges me two hundred and fifty dollars for a rehone of the cylinders, assembling the engine and resurfacing the block. He charges me another two hundred for resurfacing the head and installing new valve seals and making sure the seats are cut correctly for the valves. Good luck.

Thanks for the responces. The engine is an 7mge, non-turbo. If it is a BHG, I have seen all of the post on that problem with the 7mge and understand what that requires. I'm sure it is rod knock, been around it before and there is no doubt. I have spent several days in past posts, and have read through several complete rebuilds. Pullin an engine and replacing I could do, rebuilding I'm not sure that I have the tools and knowledge to help my son get this done. Any sugestions for shops or help in the louisville area? Any reliable rebuilder information. There is one through Ebay that has a long block for 1,500 before shipping and core. (JIS is the company. http://http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/TOYOTA-86-92-SUPRA-7MGE-ENGINE-LONG-BLOCK-TLB7MS-/130465508235?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item1e6059ab8b[/URL]

Mods, Please move to 7mge Engine section
