This may be a really stupid question but I searched around and didn't find the answer.

I have a 92 super red (3e5) car and was wondering if it has a clear coat. I think I have read that it is a single stage paint with clear mixed in but I am looking for some confirmation that this is true.

If any of the factory paint colors aren't clear coated this may be a good thread to list them in as well.

thanks,

Dave

someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe single stage has clear mixed in the paint.

again, I'm not positive on that.

I'm sure someone will chime in.

3E5- Super Red II is a single stage paint that has the base/clear mixed into one, just like kabanimk3supra said. When you wetsand the paint you will notice that the red comes off also, but if it were a 2-stage paint (bc/cc) when you wetsand it the clear is the only one coming off. I believe the majority of solid color automotive paint is single staged to make the painters life easier, now if it were a metallic paint, it would have clear on top of it so the metallic bits dont come off easily, and the benefit of bc/cc is that it seems to be more durable, if you sand a little too much off single stage paint, the primer shows up. Although single stage paint usually fades (chalky paint) while basecoat/clearcoat method usually ends up with the clear chipping off, but yeah that should cover most of the basics about paint methods

Re: Stupid question: Guess what I did know about the clear coat either I thought our cars were two stage. Apparently I'm stupid as well.

White cars did not have a clear coat. The paint stains easily, and takes alot of elbow grease to clean. I made sure my new paint included a clear coat.

<-- that is my car before new paint. You can see a brown stain on the bumper below the license plate that I was never able to remove.

^---Yes, it's very annoying, I have different "stains" on my front and rear bumpers, you can see them in my sig if you look closely..

I'm going to repaint my white package 043 with a nice clear coat for durability..

Damn near all automotive paints are a bc/cc(two stage) nowadays, whereas ,in the 80's/90's ,almost all auto manufacturers were still using single stage. Metallic colors were/are available as a single stage too.
The main thing with clearcoat is that it offers superior UV protection, the durability is not that much greater than single stage.

if you have stains, take a claybar and some mothers wax to it. It will look new again.

it made a night and day difference on my white supra. the rubbing got rid of those nasty stains for me.

from my experience, that paint has 2 stage paint, because i bought a fender off a dark blue pearl 87 and when i was sanding it down the color wasnt coming off until i sanded the clear off eventually. pearl/metallic paint should have clear over it to keep the metallic even if the surface is sanded or buffed
