Supra's didn't have OBD-II until after 1996.

The MKIII is OBD-Nothing... It predates the OBD system.

lol, the most that thing is gonna do is flash a code. Then you have to look up the code, find out what it means, and what the possible causes are.

PITA when you can take any obd2 vehicle to A.Z. and get it scanned free. They'll even give you a little print out with an explanation, and possible causes.

They dont read the code for free. They make you rent the tool, which is like $150 and scan it yourself.

For what it's worth, since OBD2 was the standardization of OBD, OBD1 essentially encompasses everything before OBD2, including the TCCS.

At least, that is my understanding.

Chris: Hmmm... I'll check on that tomorrow. I'm pretty sure that they're supposed to test it for you, just like alt., starters, etc.

Yeah, that happen to me(i think because im mexican) The guy comes out and tells me, ok it's 120 to rent it. i was like WTF? I wanted to erase a code my g/f's 350z . After i took it to get some burgers( i raced another 350z). I paid the 120 because i did not feel like driving 75 miles to get my friends and my g/f would have been super mad at me.(my g/f later told me that the MIL light keep coming on and off and it had done this after she washed the car.) so i paid 120 bucks for nothing:cry:

Wow, you guys are getting ripped off. It's free here. Even if you were to take it to a reputable mechanic, the most they would charge to check a code on any vehicle would be about $65. $120 to rent the tool...:3d_frown:

so what is ODB I and ODB II ?

whats its purpose ?

Will

OBD I was the first implemented diagnostic to read trouble codes from the ECM/PCM. It went horribly wrong as each manufaturer implemented it in their on way.

OBD II goes further into diaagnostics but also unfies the system. The fedral US EPA, CARB,and the auto manufactures mandated that codes and the DLC be standardized for all manufacturers

There is alot more to it but that is the basic story. OBD II makes diagnosing the car much simpler.

that is also the way I understood it.

Also, I think that in most OBDII cars (well, both my nissans anyway) there is always some way to read the codes using the check engine light. Google search turned up the answer for me.

In the Honda world there was:
OBD0 which was from like 86 or 87(or whenever they switched from carbs to FI)-91.The ECUs had a little light inside them with a spot in the cover to see the light that flashed the code whenever the CEL was lit up.So you had to pull the carpet up on the passenger floorboard to read it the codes flashed by the little light. The JDM engines/ecus used two 2-wire o2 sensors to read 2 cyl. pairs to make corrections to fuel which the usdm used only 1 o2 sensor

92-95 OBD1 actually had a port in the passenger compartment to hook a scan tool up to to read the code but the code could also be read by jumpering a little 2 port brown plug in on under the passenger side dash that would flash the CEL.This is when they actually switched from a 2 wire o2 sensor to a single 4-wire o2 sensor.

96-98 OBD2 had a scan tool port as well but also had the same brown plug you can jumper to flash the CEL to read the code.(which is what i use to check my CELs because i have a PnP conversion harness to run an obd1 ecu because it can be socketed and tuned using freeware)Also this is when Honda started using 2 4-wire o2 sensors; one before and one after the cat. convertor.

99-00 is obd2 type 2
Also all honda VTEC engines had knock sensors while the non vtec engines did not have knock sensors.
But this isnt the Honda world so i dont know why i posted this.
