Depending on what year you got your 2j from, it may or may not have an OBDII port, and even then, are those normally included with a harness? I thought that was something that usually stays with a car... Either way, most likely you could wire it in. Otherwise you're looking at an OBDI setup, and I can't say I've ever seen a scanner more complicated than a paperclip for one of those...

i beleive it was from 1996 and up that cars switch to obd-2 systems, and the mk3 went up to 1992 so it had the obd1 set up which is the "paperclip" set up. and yes obd2 stays with the car but i was just wondering if anyone has succesfully wiried in the 2j harness to the mk3 obd port to read fuel trim, coolant, afm, etc. to see if everything is running in order. and mystery is that link about building a obd port to plug into a computer??

Did you find out any more info on this Jesse? The concept intrigues me, and some of the stuff you can do with OBDII is pretty cool. Some of the gauge displays that read off OBD data always seemed cool to me, but would be of no use to most of us. Now if someone could make it happen, you'd at least have that option. Not sure if it would be worth it in the long run, since if you're interested in that sort of thing, you probably have a standalone anyway, right?

Anyway, tired ramblings aside, post an update if you found out anything promising. :)

havent found anything yet but if you go to the link posted in the 4th post and download the program in the 1st post on that thread its sort of a scanner for your laptop, limited paramaters but very useful i would say. you just would have to wire up the connector to connect it to your laptop. ive downloaded the program and it does pop up and show parameters but i just bought my 2jz engine this week so it would be a while till i get to this point and i dont plan on dishin out 1G for a standalone plus constant tuning, thats why i plan on running stock ecu and aristo twins just to get her on the road.

Well sort of.. my car is a mk1 gs300. So i just accessed the ecu with DLC2 port under the dash.
But you can use the diagnostic port on the harness that sits next to intake manifold.
All you need is VF1 bridged thru the resistor to TE2 and E1

so I take it your running a 2jz-ge? and I was going to go with VF1 bridged plan but how did you wire a DLC into the PCM? so you could acutally hook up a scanner or code reader?

Actually im running a 1jz on a 2jzgte ecu. The DLC2 is factory present on all early GS's. It has a similar pinout to the engine bay diagnostic connector and is considered a shortcut for the techs to utilize there scanners while sitting in the car. Just be sure you do all the bridging and soldering at the DB9 connector end of the cable.
