noob question, how do i get those check engone codes?

I know this is a noob question but I'm going to be the bigger man and ask, rather than continue not knowing. Until last week I haven't had a problem with my 1JZ, even though I have had it about 1 year 1/2, the check engine light turns on, but how do I get the codes to find out what's wrong, thank u
