Noob external wastegate question...

Well I think my external wastegate isn't hooked up right because all I did was mount it onto the manifold and didn't connect any vac lines to it. Did I do something wrong here? My external wastegate came with no instructions.

There are two threaded holes on the top, one in the center and one next to it. There is also another threaded hole on the side of the wastegate.

you have to run a vaccum line from somewhere between the turbo and the TB, preferably next to the turbo, to the wategate. If you dont then you will run max boost on your turbo because there is nothing to stop it from boosting. its practically the same as running the line from your turbo to your stock actuator.

How come mine just doesn't boost? I can't get any boost going for some reason, it basically feels like a NA.

My turbo doesn't have a vac line so would I run it from the throttle body? Can I get a diagram or picture?

Also isn't the max boost controlled by the spring? I have a 1 bar spring in mine.

no, if you have no wastegate hooked up, your turbo should boost untill it cant build any more boost. Basically because it has nothing to stop it, which is what your wastegate does. i have no idea why you are building no boost at all. sorry.

hmmm....

no vac line to the WG and driving the car...Perhaps we have already toasted a turbo?

Well the car has never seen over 3000 rpms... that's not even enough to boost. But yeah either the wastegate is stuck or I installed it incorrectly.

Today I actually tried to boost it and my gauge just showed 0. No shaft play or oil out the exhaust. Still spins freely. :icon_conf

well hook up your wastegate correctly and see what happens, if you have no nipple on your turbo to run a vaccum line to the wastegate, run a vaccum line somewhere between the turbo and the TB to your wastegate. the farther away from the turbo you go though the more boost spike. keep that in mind.

hmm ok, well doesnt sound like the turbo is bad....yet. Whatever is keeping the turbo from spooling, probably saved you a ton of money. Fix the WG first then figure out why you arent boosting, or you can add a new motor to your parts list.

you could tap a fitting on your turbo compressor housing But if you have a brand new turbo from HKS or ATP SP and spent a lot of money on it and dont want to void the warrenty then TAP it into the hose or the pipe right infront of the compressor housing outlet.

While I admire the DIY attitude and the willingness to get in and get your hands dirty if you have NFI please ask BEFORE you guys try to do things like this.....

Worst case scenario would have been eleventy seven PSI boost and flat rear tires from driving over the crank and rods.....

Wow...just wow

First off, what kind of wastegate is it? What turbo? What manifold?

You NEED to run a vaccum line as it has been plainly stated. If you tell me what gate you have I'll tell you exactly what to hook up.

Turbo: T61
Manifold: Ebay manifold
Wastegate: 50mm HKS wastegate

But yeah, I'm just going to tap the line in front of the turbo on a intercooler pipe. So if there is no vac line the external wastegate should remain shut regardless of spring tension?

hahaha...... i bet i know why you cant hit boost, is it an ebay turbo as well? if so you probably bought one of those revamped diesel turbos with an exhaust a/r of 1.15 .........meaning you will not hit boost until 5000 rpm or greater.

but yes the the wastegate will remain closed until there is enough pressure to overcome the spring and force the valve open.
