I came upon a 87 automatic no turbo supra wondering of its worth my time to get it and swap a turbo 5 speed drivetrain into it and what it would entail other than engine and tranny any suggestions would b appreciated

I am just completing the exact same swap and hope you can avoid some of my mistakes. I bought a JDM engine/trans listed on ebay from a seller in Canada. The parts were listed as having less than 50k miles and came with wiring and computer and the ad said I was buying exactly what was shown in the photos. Price was $1500 plus $300 shipping. What I got was a engine with an automatic flywheel, a trans locked in 2nd gear and the wrong harness and computer for my car. JDM engines are from right hand steering cars so several other issues came up. I was lucky enough to find some parts in junkyards nearby (pedals, clutch cylinder) but had to buy flywheel, clutch, drive shaft, engine harness, computer, water pump, belts hoses etc. Also pulled head and replaced valve guide seals and head gasket, used ARP head bolts, pulled oil pan to inspect and clean. I now have run the engine and it smokes worse than any engine I have even run so I pulled the turbo (a job that took all day) and looks like the unit needs a rebuild. I have learned that there are several other swaps that might have been smarter, but too deep to quit now. I am told the lexus V8 is a good swap, perhaps better than the 1JZ, but good luck what ever you decide. The SM forum has proven a very valuable source for info and parts and will continue to be my main tool in this project.

I have an 89 5.0 mustang kinna tired of the v8 I spent a little over $8000 on it and I'm ready for something new and I'm just drawn to the supra... If I could find some one willing is trade the mustang for a turbo 5 speed targa top supra... Thanks for the info
