Having the same problem - Car is loud as hell in gear over 40 mph when slowing down, goes away when I push in the clutch.

You fix it yet?

Does yours clunk or have a lot of driveline lash or freeplay when going on and off the gas?

My rear diff is going out, has been for about five+ years. Not sure whether it's the gearset, diff clutch, or bearings, but with age and abuse come wear, so mine is probably all worn out to some degree. The noise has been slowly getting louder, but each rear diff fluid change quitens it a bit, at least for a while. It now has a nice city/school bus whine to it that only happens when I'm moving and stops when I depress the clutch pedal (remove all drive load from the differential gearset). Mine has a noticable clunk and a lot of freeplay between on-and-off throttle (loaded to unloaded) conditions. I'm overdue for a fluid change...

Maybe...?

FWIW, I finally diagnosed mine last year by raising the car securely off it's wheels with stands, running the car in and out of gear, and listening with a mechanics stethoscope while also checking driveshaft alignment, ujoint and support bearing condition, and the rest of the TSRM recommended inspections and tests (clutch, ujoint, rear diff, bearing freeplay, wear limits, fluid checks & changes, etc).

For the first several years I just kept driving it until it made itself more noticeable through other symptoms. (clunk, lash, freeplay out of spec, etc.). I did keep fresh fluid in though...with the old school Ford LSD additive and Redline gear oil.
