FWIW, I finally diagnosed mine last year by raising the car securely off it's wheels with stands, running the car in and out of gear, and listening with a mechanics stethoscope while also checking driveshaft alignment, ujoint and support bearing condition, and the rest of the TSRM recommended inspections and tests (clutch, ujoint, rear diff, bearing freeplay, wear limits, fluid checks & changes, etc).
For the first several years I just kept driving it until it made itself more noticeable through other symptoms. (clunk, lash, freeplay out of spec, etc.). I did keep fresh fluid in though...with the old school Ford LSD additive and Redline gear oil.
